The Little Lantern
Title: The Little Lantern
The evening sun cast long shadows over the quiet streets of their small town. Devang, a gentle, hardworking man, returned home from the workshop, his hands still dusty from the day’s labor. Divya, his eight-year-old daughter, ran to greet him at the gate, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Papa! Look what I made in school today!” she exclaimed, holding out a small, delicate paper lantern.
Devang crouched down, careful not to smudge the lantern, and smiled. “It’s beautiful, Divya. Just like you.”
Divya’s eyes twinkled. “Will you help me light it tonight?”
As the sun dipped below the horizon, father and daughter sat on the terrace, the little lantern trembling in Divya’s hands. Devang carefully struck a match and lit the wick. The lantern flickered, casting a warm glow across their faces.
“Papa, why do we need light in the dark?” Divya asked, her voice soft.
Devang thought for a moment, looking at the tiny flame dancing against the evening breeze. “Sometimes, beta, life feels dark and uncertain. But even a small light can guide us, remind us of hope, and show the way forward. That’s why we make lanterns—to never forget there’s always light, even when it feels far away.”
Divya nodded thoughtfully, clutching the lantern closer. “Papa… I learned something new today. Our teacher said… ‘Reading is the key of memory.’ She said if we read and remember, we can carry knowledge forever, just like carrying light inside us.”
Devang’s eyes softened. “That’s very true, Divya. Every book you read, every story you remember… it becomes a little lantern in your mind. And when life feels uncertain, these lanterns—these memories—will light the way.”
Divya smiled, hugging her father tightly. “Then I want to read many, many stories, Papa, so I can have a sky full of lanterns!”
Devang hugged her back, feeling the warmth of her words seep into his tired heart. “And you will, beta. Always. You already are a bright lantern, and one day, you’ll light the way for others too.”
As the lantern floated gently into the twilight sky, father and daughter watched it rise together, carrying their shared hopes, love, and the glowing promise of memory and knowledge.
