Long ago there was a very vast kingdom named Hastinapura. The King was very benevolent and looked after the country men with a lot of care and compassion. His Kingdom was rich with greenery, and everything was available in abundance. People ate well, wore well and led a good life. The kingdom was ruled by King Shantanu who was a good warrior and able King. He was very fond of hunting and other such activities. But his primary concern was to protect his country and the men from any trouble or attack from enemies. He was very efficient with waging and winning wars as well.     

One day he went on a hunting spree deep into a forest. After long hours of hunting, he got tired and went near the river Ganga and got fresh by washing his face with the fresh water and felt relaxed and refreshing. Just then he saw a woman who had come to fetch water from the river. King Shantanu was stunned looking at her beautiful face. She was extremely fair with long hair and lovely facial features. The King could not resist himself from approaching her. He went near her and introduced himself as the King of Hastinapura and appreciated her for her beauty and expressed his wish to marry her. The beautiful lady agreed to marry him but said he had to agree to three of her conditions.

 King Shantanu was surprised with what she said but as he was desperate to get married to her, he agreed to abide to her conditions.    The first condition was to not ask her who she was, the second condition was to not ask her from where she came, and the third condition was to not ask her what she did. She even warned the King that if he failed to follow even one condition, she would get separated from him and would never see him again. Bitten by her beauty King Shantanu readily agreed to all het conditions making her his queen.      

They started living together happily I'm their beautiful Palace. Soon the queen delivered a beautiful son. The entire countrymen were so happy looking at the cutest baby boy. They decked up the entire Kingdom and had a lot of celebrations. After a few days one night he saw his wife the queen carrying the baby in her arms and going near the River silently. As she had already set a condition of not asking anything he followed her to see where she was going.He saw his wife dumping his child into the River. He was shocked but had no choice but to keep quiet. This procedure was repeated again and again but when she was about to do the same with his eighth child King Shantanu confronted her. As he was talking to her he observed she got transformed into a mermaid. This was even more shocking to him.                    . .

Then she spoke saying that she was Ganga and she along with her husband was cursed by God Brahma, to beget children as humans on earth who infact were the divine vasus.
