People believe that Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is an awakening Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. In India there are 12 Devine Jyotirlinga Temple of Lord Shiva are located. It is believed that Lord Shiva visited himself on the Jyotirlinga places as Shivling. Trimbakeshwar pilgrimage is also known as a Kumbh region where Kumbh Mela is held after every 12 years of interval. Kushawart Kund is located 400 meters away from the Trimbakeshwar temple. Kushawart Kund is the place where the Ganga Godavari river reemerges after disappearing from Brahamagiri hills. Trimbakeshwar Temple is located at the foothill of Brahamagiri hills. There is a big story behind why the Godavari River disappeared again and again from Brahamagiri hills. 

Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga looks very different from the other 11 Jyotirlinga of India. Jyotirlinga of Trimbakeshwar has three faces. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga has three thumb size small lingas which is a symbol of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. This beautiful Trimbak Temple is constructed from 1755 to 1786 AD by the third Balaji Bajirao (Nanasaheb Peshwa). This 1000-year-old Trimbakeshwar Temple is constructed in a Nagara style in a very huge area with black stone.  


Story Of Godavari River


It is believed that Sage Gautama and his wife Ahilya lived in Brahamagiri hills. At that time on Brahamagiri Hill people were affected by a pang of hunger because of 24 years of famine. Sage Gautam daily goes to his farm to sow rice. A large group of sages took shelter in Sage Gautam Ashram due to famine and Sage Gautam daily fed all the sages who took shelter in his Ashram. Sage Gautam merits (Punya) are increased day by day because blessings of all the sages who took shelter in his ashram. Lord Varun (Lord of rain) is arranged rain in the area of Sage Gautam's farm daily because he is pleased by seeing Sage Gautam's hard work and his devotion. Sage Gautam increased merit blessed him with abundant grain.

Lord Indra started to fill jealous of Sage Gautam and ordered Lord Varun to rain all over the Trimbakeshwar. So that feminine will be over and all Sage are gone back to their home and Sage Gautam merits will be weekend. Even though the famine was over, Sage Gautama asked all the sages to stay there and he continued to feed them. All the sages also started to fill jealous after seeing Sage Gautama's increased merits.

One day all Sages sent cows to Sage Gautama's farm, It was a Jaya- the Goddess Parvati's friend. When Gautama Rishi was trying to drive away the cow, the cow fell down.

Sage Gautam felt very sad because of the sin of cow killing. Disappointed, Sage Gautama performed penance to Lord Mahadev for thousands of years on Brahmagiri hills. Lord Mahadev was pleased by his worship and appeared, Sage Gautama to ask his desire to wash away his sins by bathing in the waters of the Ganges. Then Mahadev sent Ganga on earth. Everyone believed that bathing in the holy waters of the Ganges washes away all sins.

But the Ganga River is not ready to stay at Brahamagiri Hills alone. She wanted to stay with Lord Shiva. Ganga disappeared again and again from Brahamagiri hills. Sage Gautama could not able to bathe in her water. Sage Gautam surrounded her by chanting some mantras that her water flow will be stopped there. That pond is known as Kushawart Kund. Today This Kushawart Kund is known as the origin place of the Ganga Godavari River. Sage Gautama takes a bath in the water of Ganga and vanished the sin of killing a cow. This is the story of the Ganga Godavari origination at Trimbakeshwar.
