The success of freedom not only decided by having independence but also how developed ourselves we are after independence is important. The success of independence is closely connected with growth of prosperity of women.

Women across the globe have made their mark in every field that they have entered. From politicians to entrepreneurs, women have been trailblazers for society. Indian women, similarly, have planted their footprints in diverse fields locally as well as globally. They are icons of women empowerment and inspire others to break free from the societal stigmas and pursue their dreams.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Breaking the Bias’. Let us look at women who are truly shattering stereotypes and leading future generations.

Maya Vishwakarma

Maya Vishwakarma is the founder and chairperson of Sukarma Foundation. She hails from Mehragaon, Narsinghpur, Madhya Pradesh where she led the initiative to set up a mini-factory that employs local women to manufacture low-cost sanitary napkins for tribal and rural girls.

Popularly known as the ‘Pad Woman of India’, Maya Vishwakarma is working tirelessly towards breaking the stigma around menstruation and addressing the inaccessibility of sanitary napkins in rural parts of India. She is also helping provide reasonable sanitary pads in remote areas of the country. Her personal experiences have inspired her to take on the issue and spread awareness on female hygiene and sanitation.
