Swami Vivekananda was going to Chicago to take part in the World Conference of all the Religions. He represented India and Hinduism in the Parliament of World religion, in Chicago.

However his mother named Bhubaneswari Devi wanted to test him that whether he was well qualified for this grand responsibility or not!

She prepared a good meal and after that both of them sat down to have some fruits. Swami Vivekananda cut the fruit, ate it and after that, his mother asked him for the knife.

He handed over the knife to his mother and she seemed very pleased. She said that Vivekananda had passed the test and was eligible to take part in the world Parliament of Religions.

Swami Vivekananda was confused and asked his mother about this.

She replied that when she asked for the knife, Swami Vivekananda gave the knife by holding its sharp edge and kept the wooden handle of knife towards her, so that she would not get hurt while taking the knife!

She explained that it is good to have compassion and to take care of others .This is a remarkable quality and it is the law of the nature that the more selfless a person is, the more they would receive in return!

Hence Swami Vivekananda passed the test and then flew to Chicago and represented India before the World! It was September 11 in the year 1893 when the First World's Parliament of Religions took place. And Swami Vivekananda's speech was so awe inspiring that the whole audience listened in pin-drop silence and erupted in applause after he had finished his speech. Such was the personality of Swami Vivekananda!
