King Shibi
King Shibi
King Shibi was the son of Ushinara, a Lunar Dynasty king of Kashi. He was a just and righteous leader.
Lord Agni and lord Indra heard his fame and they decided to test him. Lord Agni took the form of a dove and Indradev became a hawk. Then the hawk started following the dove, which finally sought protection from king Shibi. The king promised to save the dove.
The eagle became angry and accused the king of taking away his rightful food. King Shibi replied that he would offer the flesh from his own body to satiate the hunger of the eagle.
The eagle wanted an equal quantity of flesh as the weight of the dove. A balance was brought, and the king started cutting his flesh. But the dove started getting heavier with every piece of flesh kept on the balance.
However, King Shibi did not deter and sat on the balance, offering his entire body to the eagle.
This pleased the gods who then came into their real forms. They restored him to his original condition and granted him many boons. The gods above showered him with flowers and praise.
Thus king Shibi proved that he is a great follower of Dharma and a man of words.
