How to be free from attachment

Once a man visited a great saint ashram to find out how to be free of desires, greed and attachments. 

The saint hopped up, ran to a nearby pillar and held on to it, screaming, "Save me from this pillar! Save me from this pillar!"

The man thought the saint had become mad, and said so, adding, "You are holding the pillar ; the pillar is not holding you. You can simply let it go." 

The saint said quietly to the man, " *If you can understand that, then you have your answer.".
