The Storm Rages On
The Storm Rages On
I look at you and remember
You were the one I wanted
To spend my whole life looking at
Years have passed and yet I search
To spot the flaws that are there to see
The wisdom of age, the soothing balm of time
To have spread that layer that protects
Against hurt, against pain
But all I still feel
Are burning eyes, stinging tears
Threatening to spill over
While you look at me
Wordless we look, nothing more left to say
Memories simmer like dull logs
A dying fire never strong enough to burn
The roads that diverged
Today lay merged, but we have lost the direction
To follow the path where once lay our dream
Therein lies now but ashes and dead dust
Fallen petals from a crushed rose
Lay crumpled at our feet
The song plays on for fresh, new love
The words still fresh in our heartbeats
But all we share is a silence
Your hands tremble close to mine
Each finger that was once so precious
And played a loving tune over my heart
Not mine anymore to hold
Your strong arms now droop with burdensome years
Perhaps someone's shelter, never mine
We stand in the rain, waiting out the storm
Knowing all the while, this is all that remains
This moment is all we have, a weakness we realize
The sun will shine, we will snap and walk away
From a dream that was long forgotten
But for now we wait as it pours and pours
Over the earth, over troubled hearts
The rains that wash away pain and memories
Bring them rushing back into our lives
I look at you and sadly realise
Nothing has changed, I still feel the same
I could spend my whole life looking
