The combination of movements of body and hand 

The story changes with the way you stand 

Without facial expressions, it looks bland 

Its one of the major classical dances of our prestigious land 

 

From the North of India, this dance originates

After gaining popularity, it spread to other states 

Two institutions were formed after the Muslim age 

When most Hindu temples had been destroyed in rage 

 

Katha means story 

The stories are mostly of Hindu gods’ glory 

Ramayana was the first story the kathaks told 

The epic was narrated through dance, with expressions, bold 

This artform is priceless, just like gold

 

For dancers, lehenga choli is the most common dress 

Kathak is a dance which can help relieve stress 

It also makes you physically strong 

Improves mental health which prevents us from doing wrong 

Ability to focus increases 

The coordination and expression join the story’s pieces 

 

Ramayana was the first one to be sung 

That’s from where the ‘KushiLavas’ (kathaks) sprung 

Kathak is more than just a hobby for me
