On a beautiful evening of fall when the wind was somewhat chilly, he was sitting on a bench, slightly hunched over with a sunflower, twirling it nervously around his fingers, unable to decide how to say what he wants to. Each time a couple passed him, their darkling shadows would eclipse his sunflower, hiding it from the orange glow of the setting sun. He was sweating, despite the cold breeze around him, and every once in a while, he would glance towards the entrance of the park, as if he was waiting on something but was afraid of it arriving as well, must have been a weird feeling, being impatient for something and yet being uneasy because of the very same thing. He would then close his eyes and let his face bathe in the last bits of sunshine of the day. Once again, his eyes started traveling the trail covered with the fallen autumn leaves but this time, he found what he was searching for. She was walking towards him, her hair flying all around her and her gorgeous smile rivaling the sun. She reached and he stood up, discreetly wiping his palms on his pants and then handing her the sunflower with a dazed smile as if he was lost and didn’t want to be found. Then, he pulled himself out of his reverie and went down on one knee and held out his hand for her, when she gave her hand in his, he brought it gently to his lips and kissed it with a reverent breath as if assuring himself she was real and here, but the question that remained was, was she his?

So with a deep breath he started, “I was the sunflower lost in rain, till you found me, I was restless and trying to find a way out. Now I am at peace and feel like I have found my long-lost soulmate. This sunflower was dull and lifeless, you gave him a reason to bloom again and he hopes that one day his sunshine will realize what she saved him from, and till then he wants to hold on to her with every piece of his soul, so will you give him a chance?” With glistening eyes and a precious smile on her lips, she nodded, unable to speak, and for the first time, in a long time, he took a breath without hurting, the sun behind her casting a halo around her head and making it seem like an angel herself has descended from the heaven. After their simple confessions of love, they sat back on the bench, holding onto each other as they watched the sunset. Now, many sunsets later, the sunflower was still full of life, all because he always has his sunshine with him.
