Unkept Promises

Unkept Promises

Eons ago you promised to me

of everlasting togetherness

Today you have reneged on it

Leaving me in a pile of grief

You're a liar, I'm telling this up to your face

I know you are within hearing distance

I can see that all-knowing smile

of yours

As if to say 'gotcha' this time

I sit beside you and pray

I wish to lie beside you

on the funeral bed

Mourners direct toward me

pitiful stares, some angered

at the unfairness

as to the 'why' of women

outliving men.

Pray...I never asked for it

Pray...I wish to change it in this instance

But there is no way to overrule

fate

So, I hide my neck and vision

like a turtle.
