Nia and I are besties. Nia was a sweet and talkative girl. She was my college mate. She was my roomie too. I was timid and a shy type, but Nia changed me into a valour one. She was a great party-goer. She never rejects any parties; I on the other hand was reluctant to go to parties. I wasn’t interested in dancing and drinking alcohols. I never attended parties until school; I used to go to birthday parties and wedding ceremonies with my parents. They never let me go out on my own, as I was their only daughter they were so protective about me, also I was a town girl; I didn’t like city party cultures. But in college, the situation was reversed. I was so far from my home and in a city.

Nia wouldn’t let me reject any parties. Somehow, I skipped two parties hosted by our college football team, later I couldn’t. Nia taught me, how to dance at parties. She also selected attractive dresses for me to parties. I drank wine for the first time in my life with Nia. I thought those were wrong but if I kept my limits then it would be fine. For the first time in my life, I went with Nia to a party hosted by Maria, leader of the Gamma X sorority. Nia brought an elegant blue gown for me, I wore it and we headed to the party. It went really smooth. The party attendees were so inspired by my look, as I never used to dress like that. Nia was almost drunk and I finally managed to pull her out of the party. I had real fun, later we both attended parties never rejecting a single one.

Nia helped me to enjoy a part of this world, once I thought to be disgusting. Nia shared everything with me, I also shared everything with her, but Nia couldn’t share anything about her dad. One day I asked her, she angrily left; I wondered there was something wrong, then I never asked her about it. One day she told me about the bitter past, her mother Neha was the daughter of the richest man in society, she had more riches. But on sudden accident, Neha’s parents passed away, thus she owned all their properties. Nia’s father pretended to love Neha and got married. After the marriage he showed his true colours, he took all the properties and banished Neha and baby Nia. Her mother was heartbroken. Neha stayed in an orphanage. Neha decided to die but she wanted to live for Nia. Neha wanted Nia to be independent and never blindly trust anyone as she did. When Nia was 15 years old, her mother passed away. Nia stayed in a women’s hostel, worked part-time jobs to pay her dues and she hated her dad the most.

On hearing that I was speechless, my eyes welled with tears. I never thought Nia had such a bitter past. She never showed her pain and always smiled. I hugged her and comforted her. Later, I cared for her so much than before, she began to call me “Miss Nanny” We both had great times in college. We got top marks in our subjects. Some people were jealous of us and mocked us of being middle class, but we never minded. We were also the prettiest girls in the college. In college, some boys asked for dates with me, I refused their request as I wasn’t interested in love until I get a job.

But, Sammy never gave up. He kept on texting me and placing letters in my books. I told him that I wasn’t interested in him but he never gave an ear to me. One day, I and Nia were sitting in the Canteen and were having our favourite pasta in white sauce and a cup of Cappuccino. Sammy came and sat next to me. He began to flirt with me, I told him to stop but he put his arm around my waist, seeing that Nia was angered and slapped him.

“Don’t you dare to touch my friend?”

Sammy was never slapped by anyone; he was the richest student in the college and was the dream boy loved by many girls. Nia wasn’t finished, she raised her hand for another slap but I prevented her,

“You will pay for this Nia” Sammy angrily warned her and left.

Later Nia faced some issues in the college. Her project was missing. We searched for it but didn’t get it. I was confused. Our professor scolded Nia and asked her to present before evening. I helped her and somehow we made a new one. In later days, Nia faced some other issues, I was bewildered. One of my friends told me it must be Sammy’s work. My face turned red and I went to see Sammy. He was on the football ground, as usual, mocking and flirting, with the sorority girls and his annoying friends, on seeing me he was excited,

“Hi, baby! I know you can’t forget me”

“Listen, Sammy, I need to talk to you privately” hearing my response, his friends were amused. Maria said

“Why? Don’t mess with him, he’s mine now”

“I don’t care about it, Sammy are you coming?” I asked him,

“Yes” he replied grinning and we went to the park nearby our college.

“So, you’re gonna ask a date with me, huh?”

“Shut up Sammy, what have you done?” he blinked, I shouted at him for punishing Nia. He admitted it. I told him that I never had any romantic feeling for him and asked him to stay away from us. He replied angrily that Nia had spoiled his reputation and she needed to pay. I had no options; I reasoned with him and apologized to Nia.

Sammy remained quiet for some time moved, he said that he had given up and wouldn’t intrude again. I was glad that Nia was safe. Later, Sammy and I became friends. Nia didn’t like his attitude. Soon Nia also became his friend as Sammy was also a party-goer, I was happy as the grudge was solved between them. One day Sammy invited us for his Birthday party.

Nia and I went to Sammy’s party. I gifted him a watch, Sammy really loved it. The party begun, Sammy introduced me and Nia to his parents Mr and Ms Samuelson. We greeted them and enjoyed the party. Nia was over drunk than usual, I told her to stop but she never listened. She grinned and continued drinking and was intoxicated. I sought help from Sammy, he dropped us and helped me to carry Nia to her bed, and she was unconscious. I was afraid but Sammy comforted me and told me she would be fine the next morning.

The next morning, Nia woke up lately. She had a headache. I brought her hot coffee and told her not to over drink again, “Yes, Miss Nanny” she mockingly replied, I threw a pillow at her and we started the pillow fight. Days passed with merry and happiness. Two years was over, only one year was left for us to complete our degree. I wondered how the time passed. We stepped into the final year. Sammy’s dad became the topmost business tycoon. He was very happy. Their family hosted a grant party; Sammy invited all of his friends including me and Nia.

I wasn’t willing to go to the party, something was bothering me, but Nia as usual enforced me and I finally agreed. Nia wore her mother Neha’s pink silk gown, she was ravishing in that look; I wore a dark green strapless gown. We both prettied up and went to the party. I never attended any business succession parties before, so I was quite curious; to my surprise the party was awesome.

The party decorations were stunning, most of the VIP attended the party. The meals were astonishing; I never tasted such delicacies in my life. Nia seated in the bar and had her drinks, I joined her and told her not to over drink,

“Yes, Nanny; I’ll keep my limit”

she smilingly said, I chuckled, just then Sammy showed up and joined us, we had a great party. His father gave a speech about his succession and then the real party started. DJ played the music, everyone shifted to the dance floor, Sammy asked me for a dance, I accepted and we hit the dance floor, Nia was grinning from the crowd; as the song changed I asked her to join us, she did and we trio had a great time. The party mood was in full swing, after some time Sammy asked us to join for the fireworks show on the lawn.

Nia told me to wait as she headed to the restroom, everyone crowded at the lawn, I stood back waiting for Nia, but Sammy lead me to the front, the fireworks show started; it was the best one I had ever seen. In the middle of the show, Nia showed up and we both enjoyed the rest. The party was about to get over, just then we heard a woman shouting loudly,

“Aaahhhh ….”

The whole crowd was astonished, it was Sammy’s mother; when we went to the spot, to our surprise, and Sammy’s father was murdered, immersed in his blood. On seeing his dead body and the bloodstream, Sammy staggered and cried aloud, seeing that scenario I and Nia wept. The merry mood of the party changed to mourn mood. Mr Samuelson was lying dead, his assistant called the cops and the detectives. They asked no one to leave the party as they needed to interrogate the party attendees. I was utterly broken and speechless, Nia became senseless. We both were worried,

“This party is the saddest one ever in my life,” Nia said mourning,

“Yeah, Mine too” I replied shedding tears,

the cops began to question the attendees. We completed our round. We tried to comfort Sammy; he was almost dead; the cops questioned Ms Samuelson, if they had any grudge or other issues with anyone, Sammy suddenly brawled with Mr Garry, he was the business foe for his father,

“You killed him!” he shouted,

the cops separated them and ordered them to remain patient, there were no clues or evidence that who killed Mr Samuelson. The cops decided to send the corpse for autopsy, as they were discussing further actions, a detective came and suggested something to them, they spoke for some time and asked everyone in the party to have a drink. We were amused, the waiters presented drinks, each and everyone took a drink and we waited what the cops would do next.

Sammy and his mother were exhausted, their eyes were red, I was unable to see them in such a condition. The cops arrived after a discussion with glee, they said that they have found the culprit, everyone was shocked,

“Who’s that?” Ms Samuelson asked angrily,

a cop pointed his finger in our direction, I was intrigued, the cop said “NIA” I was astonished, “ No, she can’t do such a thing” I stood for her, everyone was unable to believe, Sammy angrily grabbed her hand and asked her whether she killed his father, Nia didn’t respond; the cops approached her and questioned her why she killed Mr Samuelson, “I didn’t kill him” she replied crying, the cops decided to take her in custody, I blocked them and asked them what sort of evidence they had to take fake accusation on Nia.

A cop step forward and showed a torn piece of pink fabric found in the victim’s hand, it was definitely Nia’s, also they showed the murder weapon, a sharp knife that was used to stab him 23 times which was hidden in the restroom, My heart was pounding as I knew Nia went to the restroom before the fireworks show; then they said that they retrieved the fingerprint from the knife and found that it was a perfect match with Nia’s fingerprint, I wondered how the cops got Nia’s fingerprint, then they said that they checked the fingerprints of everyone from the glasses they took to drink when the cops asked and confirmed it was Nia.

I was breathless, Sammy and his mother questioned her why she killed Mr Samuelson, Nia burst in anger and replied that Mr Samuelson was her father, who betrayed her mother and took away all the properties. I was shocked, everyone gathered at the party was astonished, and even Sammy and his mother were surprised. Nia told about the atrocities of her father and said that she killed him.

Nia said that she always dreamt of revenging her father, but she didn’t know where he was. Then at Sammy’s birthday party she saw Mr Samuelson, she was taken aback and drunk heavily to forget her past, she decided to avenge him; by befriending Sammy Nia came to know more about her father. During the party, she was waiting for a chance to kill him. She saw Mr Samuelson heading towards the roof for answering a call, Nia followed him, she told him that she was his daughter; he was shocked and asked her to forgive him and hugged her; she used that opportunity and stabbed him, his nose wasn’t heard due to fireworks, Mr Samuelson tried to prevent her, during which he tore a small fabric of Nia’s gown; then after killing him she hurried and hid the knife in the restroom and joined the rest of the show.

Nia never thought that she would be caught; she cried that finally justice was given to her and her mother Neha, by her father’s death. The whole crowd was speechless. I wept and hugged her,

“Don’t cry Nanny; you’re my second mother”

“Why did you do this?”

“I needed Peace and I got it” she grinningly told me;

Sammy and his mother were unable to respond. A cop said that revenge would never change the past, what was done was done. The cops handcuffed her and took her to jail; I stood alone on the road watching the cops taking Nia away. The party went horribly wrong, the unexpected revenge never changed anything but the scar persisted.
