I love Christmas. The snow falling gently from the sky, all the lovely Christmas carols, Tamara trying to shove her Christmas hat into Pepper’s mouth during the carols (She really can’t sing). And this year, what I’m looking forward to most is a Christmas with Uncle Percy. Aunt told us we’d be moving in with them since like, forever. But it was finally confirmed yesterday. Mom and dad have to go to Arizona, for a year. Then we found out why we were staying with them. Uncle was accompanying them to the place, and with him in charge, they would probably take forever to come back.

So here we were, two days to Christmas, without our beloved Uncle Percy. Just then a car pulled into the driveway. It was uncle! We were a little surprised to see him back so early but were nonetheless very happy. “How are you back so early, Uncle,” Pepper asked. “Oh, apparently, I’m not ‘competent’ enough to run the business trip. So I’m here to celebrate Christmas with y’all.” We cringed. Uncle was acting like he had gone native.

We helped him unpack all his suitcases. Then we faced the biggest question of all: what do we have for dinner? The lockdown hadn’t ended yet, but things were getting better. So we could afford to have takeout. We decided on Asian. Aunt went to get it because if we sent uncle, we would have dinner on Christmas.

Aunt came back in ten minutes, with boxes of flat noodles, spring rolls, sushi, sesame chicken; and the best of all: fortune cookies. We were about to start when Maxine and Zack arrived. (Read my other series, ‘A Beginner’s guidebook.’) They were laden in snow, and carrying two sacks of presents, for the charity drive. “Hey Rachel, do you guys have any last-minute donations for the charity drive,” Maxine asked. “Sure,” I said, pulling out a gift-wrapped toy kitchen. “Maxine, Zack, would you like to join us for dinner,” aunt asked. “Sure. Thanks, Mrs. Smith,” Zack said. We helped them get the snow off them, and began to eat. The dog and cat kept running here and there, begging us for a piece of chicken, or maybe a noodle. They seemed to like Maxine a lot because she would give them a tiny bit of food every time they came.

Millie and Rebecca had no interest in eating their noodles. They took the box and began putting the noodles on Tyson’s head. Then they took their empty boxes, and put them on their own heads, using the handle to hold it in place. We laughed like crazy, looking at these two ‘pharaohs,’ and their noodle-haired brother.

Uncle was trying to eat noodles with chopsticks. But he just couldn’t do it. On the first two tries, he didn’t get how to hold the chopsticks. On the third try, he managed to pick up the noodles. And then drop them into Maxine’s face, who had taken the seat next to him. She wiped them off, and they fell smack into uncle’s box. He tried to pick them up with his chopsticks, and the episode repeated. “Oh for god’s sake, Percy, use a fork,” aunt cried out. Uncle ignored her and continued pretending to be the chopsticks expert

After uncle finally gave in to aunt’s advice and got himself a fork, dinner went smoothly. Until we opened the sesame chicken. As soon as we opened the box, Pumpkin pie jumped into the fish tank and Rover right behind her. Aunt took a few pieces of chicken and put them in the cat’s food bowl. Instead of going for her bowl, she went straight for the box, knocking it out of aunt’s hands. Rover trotted over and began scarfing it down. “I recommend we move to the terrace,” Zack said, with the air of a genius. We agreed and took the cookies to the terrace, where we handed them out.

Tyson opened his first. “You will hurt your leg after ten minutes,” it said. He ate his cookie. Millie went next. “You will get the best Christmas present ever.” She ate her cookie. Then there was a knock on the door. “Package for Mille Smith,” the mailman said. She ripped it open after we sanitized it. It was the toy car she wanted. She squealed in delight, and immediately sat in it, and began driving around.

Rebecca went next. “You are going to meet your best friend today.” As soon Rebecca finished her cookie, Max’s mom came over to check on us, with Max’s brother and sister, Leo and Alexandra. Rebecca really enjoyed playing with Alexandra. They had a lot of fun. We gave them each a fortune cookie. Meanwhile, Tyson tripped over Millie’s car tire. His leg was scratched. So his fortune came true as well. Leo and Alexandra got, “You will have fun tonight.” They ate their cookies. As they finished, Rebecca and Alexandra began begging for a sleepover. Aunt gave in. She offered that Max and Zack stay too. We agreed. Then, Max, Zack, and Pepper opened theirs.

Pepper got, “You will burn your tongue.” While eating her cookie, a little piece of red chili fell into it. She bit it, and went crazy, running from here to there looking for water. Zack got, “Eat a little slow. You may choke over something.” He stuffed the cookie into his mouth. He never cared about this stuff. Suddenly, he began coughing violently. We helped him out, then read Max’s fortune. She got, “You will have to cut your hair.” Her mom noticed a piece of gum stuck in her hair. “Max, honey, there is a piece of gum in your hair. We’ll have to cut it.”

Tamara’s fortune was, “You will face a great embarrassment.” Her phone buzzed. It was an Instagram update. She opened the update. It was a picture of her, with a spider in her hair. She screamed. I’m guessing she was embarrassed, although there wasn’t much to be embarrassed about.

Only my fortune was left. I opened the cookie. I got “You will witness the miracle of Christmas.” I ate my cookie. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. We went down, but there was no one but a weird contraption. There was an anonymous note attached to it: Merry Christmas Rachel. I was a bit surprised. We took it inside. I unwrapped it. It was something that looked like a weird chair. I sat down. Everyone joined me. There was a lever on the side and a safety rail in front. I pulled the lever. Suddenly, we were all pushed into a dark, dark vortex. I wondered when the spinning would stop. After a few minutes, I hit my head and blanked out.
