Melbourne airport was beautiful in the light of the setting sun. We were all so excited to finally be in Australia. Just like last year when he went to Arizona, Uncle was acting like he was a native of the place, attempting to act like he was Australian. The locals were not impressed. When aunt finally got him to act normal, and we had got all our luggage, the next thing was a taxi. Well, two taxis. There were so many of us, and so much luggage, that even two taxis wouldn’t be able to bring everything to the hotel. We were staying at Holiday Inn, which was around 7 miles from the airport. We got in and headed to a restaurant for dinner before the hotel.

We were all pretty tired, so all we wanted to do was have dinner and go back to sleep. Dinner was simple pot roast, which tasted like heaven after microwave meals on the aeroplane. Leo and Alexandra had their trademark meal, apple puree. Tyson and Millie agreed to have mac and cheese. Rebecca just had a bottle of milk.

Once we had dinner, we went to the hotel, which was in the opposite direction. So we headed 3 miles from the airport, for dinner, and then headed ten miles in the other direction, crossing the airport again. Why not just eat at the airport?

After reaching the hotel, we checked for our booking. We had booked 4 rooms: one for the Martins; one for the Lavigne’s; one for Tamara, Pepper, and me; and one for Aunt, uncle and the triplets. But there were only three rooms under our name. “Is there any way we can arrange for an extra room till the 16th,” Ms. Martin asked the woman at the front desk? “Yes ma’am, but it will cost extra,” She said. “And why would it cost extra,” aunt spoke up. “Ma’am this is peak season, and a booking done on the spot is slightly more expensive. The most I can do is upgrade one of your rooms to a suite, which has two rooms of its own, and a pullout couch that opens to a queen bed. All of this will be for free if this has been booked under the holiday deal package.” With our luck, it was under a deal package. We decided that we would take the suite, and Max and Zack, along with their families, would take their rooms as planned.

Once we got into the room, we decided to set up the pullout couch, and then go to sleep. But uncle had a different idea of what to do. He told room service that there was no need to set up the pullout couch, he would do it himself. Aunt was in the room helping us set up for bed and didn’t hear this development. We came out of the room a minute later, hearing a huge crash. Uncle had pushed the button on the couch, expecting it to be like ours where it would just loosen from the holding and it would have to be pulled out manually. But here, once the button was pushed, the whole bed came out, and all that needed to be done was the sheet to be spread. It was an aunt who did this, while uncle sat in timeout.

Once the pullout couch was set, aunt tucked the triplets into the bed and went into her room. The three of us went into our room and got ready for bed. Uncle was still in timeout. Once he finally got permission to go to sleep, he kept all of us awake, sleep talking after that horror movie on the plane. Oh well.

The next morning, all of us got up bright and early, for breakfast at The Jazz Corner Café. Everyone was so excited about our first day of vacation. We were at the café by 7, perfectly on time by our reservations. We all had pancakes and sandwiches, and all the adults had coffee. All the little kids had fruit cups and juice.

After breakfast, we headed back to the hotel to grab our bags, and change into comfortable clothes, for a day at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, or just the Melbourne Gardens. We were taking an open-air tour of the gardens, riding around the place in an open mini-bus. It’s gonna be fun!

We got to the garden just in time for our tour. Our tour guide was really friendly. But there was one person on the bus who knew more than her-Ms. Maxine Lavigne. “Did you know Melbourne Gardens extends over 38 hectares and houses a collection of more than 8,500 species of plants from around the world?” “Did you know Melbourne Gardens is home to the National Herbarium of Victoria, which houses the internationally important State Botanical Collection?” “Did you know-,” “Yeah, yeah, you read the guidebook, we get it,” Zack said. Max slumped down in her seat, offended. Tyson went up to her and gave her a flower from the bush next to our bus, where the guide was telling us about the history of the park. It had a beetle in it. She screamed.

After the tour was done, we had lunch at ‘The Terrace’. Well, not exactly lunch. It was fish fingers, scones, chicken and avocado baguettes, and my favourite, ribbon sandwiches. Aunt had the chicken burger.

By the time lunch was done, it was 3. Aunt, Mrs Lavigne, and Ms Martin sat down in the grass, chatting. Uncle took all of us kids to fly kites. They kept getting stuck in the trees. We each took turns climbing up to get them down. Finally, it was closing time, and we headed to the hotel for dinner.

Dinner was, again, pot roast, with a side of instant noodles. We needed to be up early tomorrow, for the Queen Victoria market, so we all went to our rooms early. Tamara, Max and I started binging ‘Snowdrop’. Aunt and Uncle were in Mrs Lavigne’s room, with the triplets. Pepper was off doing something with Zack. Tomorrow is gonna super fun. I can’t wait!
