Once a person who was well accomplished in his life, had amassed wealth and had everything in his life, thought to get Brahmagyan i. e. the divine knowledge. He wanted to visit Sai baba of Shirdi. He had heard a lot about him. So he booked a return tanga to Shirdi and came to meet him.

He greeted Sai baba and said that Baba please give me Brahma gyan quickly, as I have come from a great distance and I would return back. He was very impatient. Sai baba said that it is very rare for him to meet a person who has come to ask for Brahma gyan. And he would definitely give him that. Then he told him to sit and sent a boy to fetch Rs. 5 as loan from one Nandu marwari. The boy returned soon and said that his house was locked. Then baba sent the boy to Bala grocer to get the sum, with the same result. This process was repeated two to three times. Baba must be knowing that the persons from whom he wanted the hand loan, must be absent. Then why did he do so?

Then Sai baba looked at the merchant who had come come to get Brahma-gyan and said that this experiment was done for him to understand that in order to attain Brahma-gyan one has to get rid of five things(I). five pranas (2). five senses(3). mind(4). intellect and (5). ego.

The rich man had a bundle of currency notes and if he was really earnest in getting divine knowledge, he would have certainly given a paltry sum of Rs. 5 to Baba instead of being a mere onlooker, fully knowing that Baba paid all loans hundred times more than the original sum.

Thus Baba made the merchant understand that in order to get Brahma-gyan or knowledge supreme one has to qualify for it and attain the requisite qualities to attain it.

Sai baba used to live in Shirdi during the early part of 19th century. He has many devotees who believe that baba is alive and come to help his devotees when called upon. His Samadhi mandir in Shirdi built by Bapusaheb Booty, is a pilgrimage center where his holy body is kept in the center part and a life size statue of his built by Balaji Vasant Talim, is kept next to his samadhi. On normal days around five lakhs devotees visit Shirdi which goes up to ten lakhs or more during festival occasions.
