Lol, He's A Bachelor Again!!!

I look forward to Sundays as I can sleep in till the sun's rays hit my head. On waking up, I do not have to rush and turn on the laptop with the toothbrush in my hand. I am at my most leisurely self. It was that leisurely Sunday morning. Still, in bed, I picked my phone to skim through my Twitter and insta feeds. A notification pops up from my Facebook account. It was my old pal Vicky's birthday. The mention of his name brought back a flood of memories. Those good old school days. Such fun we had... The nicknames and the tease games... He was our Vigu, the naughtiest of our batch with a twinkle in his eyes. The college days were also filled with frolic. Being a science stream student did not deter him from playing a rogue. From bunking classes to spending time in the canteen, to going to movies... we were in it together. He would always hang out with we commerce boys and the dean always wondered if he had gotten the wrong boy. Post our graduation we went different ways. He landed a job in Bangalore while I was working in Ernakulam. He married his lady love, Lakshmi and settled down blissfully. The erstwhile fast friends had now become distant. Those regular chats had made way to an occasional greeting over an instant feed or a Facebook notification.

The aroma of sambhar wafting from my neighbour's kitchen brought me back to the present. I scanned my phone for Vigu's number and hit the call button. He answered my call on the first ring itself. But his voice did not have the usual ring. “Machaaa... A very happy birthday”, I sang aloud in a child-like tone. “thanks da...” came his lukewarm response. Something did not seem to be right. I guessed it would be the last night's hangover...

 “and what’s special for the day?? What has Lakshmi bhabhi prepared..??” I inquired casually. 

“don’t ask da..., she is at her parental home” whined poor Vigu.

“Care to elaborate”, I snapped back... “you guys were the most talked love birds of those days... What happened..”

He pondered for a couple of seconds before starting.” of late, Lachu had been complaining that our lives had become too boring. She kept nagging that I didn't love her as I used to... So to add spice to our lives, I planned her a surprise. I decided to surprise her with a hug... and swing her around my shoulders... just like olden times. But as the bible says, man plans and God executes. The other day I came back from the office a little early. I tiptoed to the kitchen and gently scooped her up in bridal style. She screamed.”

“you planned something so romantic... And"

“lemme finish machaa... Suddenly, the lights turned on. Lachu was at the door beside the switchboard. And guess who was in my arms..."

"Bhabhi... Who else... Stop building suspense"

Our house helps Jaanu. My bad luck is just too bad... Jaanu slipped from my hands and landed plop on the floor... So much for a romantic stunt... Thus ended my romantic surprise. Lachu packed her bags and left for her parental home."

I couldn’t help but laugh at Vigu's predicament. And I am sure Vigu is glad too. He got a chance to relive his bachelor days, albeit at a higher price.
