She knew Harish’s house didn’t have a toilet in place. She read somewhere it could be a valid ground to refuse marriage with the right support.
She sighed in relief and immediately planned to set her idea in motion. She decided not to discuss this with her friends.
She visited the Panchayat (Village Council) office to go through old newspapers that were usually accumulated on the pretext of improving her reading and writing skills which no one opposed, since they all knew she was a studious child.
She searched for stories about women who rejected marriage on grounds of poor sanitation and carefully noted those details. She continued this for a couple of more days, and there were a few cases in middle and north India, but nothing notable down south. If she could go through it she would be the first in this region.
