ESCAPE

I stood up in the knee-deep water and looked around. I was in a small dark cave with the only entrance being the place from which I had come. I closed my eyes and sighed, yet again wondering if I would ever get to see the light of day again. I decided to search for an exit.

I spent hours searching for a place to escape, even a small hole, while Sillas played with the water behind me. I scoured the walls of the cave for a hole but couldn't find any. I sat down, closed my eyes, lay down, and fell asleep. When I woke up, I realized that I was still in the same knee-deep water. There was a small bump along the edge from where I had come so the water couldn't be falling down. So where was it going?

I searched under the water, dragging my hands around the cavern repeatedly in vain. Finally, I felt something. As I was searching a corner for a hole, my hand fell through a hole. I pulled my hand back, feeling the beginnings of hope. I placed my hand in the same spot again and felt the hole. It was medium sized though not big enough to fit me. I felt around inside the hole to see if there was anything sharp or strong for me to widen the hole. My hand felt something sharp against it. It felt sharper than any rock I had ever felt or seen. I suddenly realized what it was. It was my spear. I had found the small hole which opened up into the hole in which I had spent a few days. I was about to take the spear when I remembered that my brother's hammer should be next to it. I found it, marveling at my amazing luck. I pulled the hammer through and gripped it tightly. I swung it at the wall as hard as I could without realizing that the wall was very old and weak, as was the ceiling.

Two seconds later rocks were pouring down on me on all sides. I struggled to push through the rocks, Sillas bounding in my wake. A rock hit me hard on my head making me stumble and fall. A bolt of red-hot pain went through my leg. I got up and stumbled onward. I jumped with my last ounce of energy and landed in water, the whole cavern crumbling behind me. I looked back slowly at the broken wall, leading to a huge pile of rocks. I lay my head against the floor and closed my eyes.

When I got up, the first thing I heard was a voice. It wasn't Lorin but a woman. It sounded like my mother. My eyes shot open and I stood bolt upright. I grabbed my spear and ran toward the voice. In the distance I could see a figure moving in the direction of the lake. I ran after the figure and almost yelled before I remembered that Lorin would hear me.

The figure abruptly turned to the right and disappeared down a passage. I stumbled after her and dragged my broken leg along the floor. I ran as fast as I could. WHAM! A fist like a rock punched me square in the face. I tried looking up before I fainted out of exhaustion and pain from my broken leg.
