It was 31st October, the night of Halloween. It was dark everywhere, with pumpkins lighting up the way to Caspian’s dorm. Caspian had stayed back in the library to finish up some last minute work he had to hand in the next day. Moreover, he was reluctant about going back to his dorm. Halloween meant tricks, and tricks meant his best friends, Sirius and Ben, wouldn’t let him sleep. Preparing himself for whatever frivolities his friends were planning, he shifted his laptop and pulled out his keys, only to find the door unlocked.

Nothing would have prepared him for what he saw after he opened the door. Lying on his bed in the darkroom was a sight that made Caspian’s blood run cold, his heart dropping to his feet as he ran in. Surrounded by a puddle of dried blood was the pale body and tousled black hair of his best friend. There was a knife stuck in Sirius’ abdomen and his white shirt was stained red. His eyes were closed and his fists were unclenched and open. If it weren’t for the blood, he might have been sleeping.

Caspian let out a strangled cry, his laptop falling to the carpeted floor. Tears streaming down from his eyes, he blindly ran to call somebody when he dashed into the lanky figure of Ben. Unable to speak, he raised a shaking finger to point in the direction of the body. Ben walked down expressionlessly and glanced at Sirius for a second, pulling a knife out of his pocket and strolled towards Caspian.

Horrorstuck as realisation dawned on him, Caspian closed his eyes and waited for the impact that never came. Opening them, his eyes found the grinning face of Ben, and, behind him, Sirius sitting up with a smile, “Are you serious?” he yelled at Ben indignantly, who didn’t miss a beat to reply. “No, mate, he’s Sirius, I’m Ben.” Taking one look at Caspian’s outraged expression, Sirius and Ben burst out laughing, the former falling to the floor. “What about the knife?” shouted Caspian. “Retractable one mate. Paint for blood, makeup, you know how it works,” replied a grinning Sirius, holding up the trick knife.

Caspian took a look at his laughing friends and stalked out, only to return ten minutes later and wordlessly go to bed. Sirius and Ben knew they would have to grovel the next day.

Morning dawned bright and Caspian was avenged when he woke up to two screams from the bathroom, followed by a week of hot pink and neon green hair for the two pranksters.
