In the decomposing stretch of Mumbai, skyscrapers projected like sharp giant teeth against an overcast sky. The landscape was a mix of decaying buildings and narrow lanes. This was a city where the past and present collided, where hope struggled beneath the weight of reality. For some it is also a dream city as people from many stretch of life and megacities arrive here in a hope to catch their dreams. Although the city being a turmoil it also provides an incredible rush of adrenaline and offers countless opportunities that are simply unattainable in any other Indian metropolis, it is incredibly draining. It's amazing how it manages to keep up despite Mumbai heaving under the weight of the vast number of people that move into the city every day, living on the streets due to a shortage of homes and infrastructure that cannot handle this inflow. Yet, amid the decay, the spirit remains strong. Each drop of rain washed away a little more of the city's former glory, but it also nourished the seeds of perseverance buried deep within its heart.

The air, thick with humidity and despair, reminded everyone of better days gone by. Kavya Sharma lived in Borivali, a suburb where dreams faded as quickly as they were born. At 5’7”, she stood tall, her presence a contrast to the decay around her. Her long hair flowed down her back like a river of memories, a testament to a time when hope seemed endless. Yet it was her grey eyes that’s truly captivating. They were hauntingly beautiful, shimmering with the depth of untold stories. Each glance revealed layers of longing, like an old photograph capturing a moment lost to time. In their depths, you could sense the weight of nostalgia, a longing for days that seemed just out of reach.

Her evenings are usually spent scrolling through an app designed for connecting with people. A perfect digital sanctuary in a digital era where smiles hid loneliness and profiles echoed empty promises. One evening, as she swiped through countless faces, she stumbled upon him: Nikhil Bhatia. The name resonated within her, like some forgotten moments which clicked like a flash. As her fingers were scrolling through his page it felt like she is opening an old forgotten story book. Each word and image pulled her into a world she'd thought she’d left behind. She paused, her heart pounding, contemplating whether this was an opportunity to rekindle a connection or merely a transient instance in her perpetual scrolling.

Nikhil Bhatia, who was once a slender boy with glasses and a timid character, has now transformed into a charismatic individual. He was striking, almost otherworldly; his strong physique seemed crafted by hands that knew beauty intimately. Broad shoulders and a chiseled jawline made him appear like a statue come to life. His amber eyes sparkled with a mix of mischief and warmth, pulling Kavya in, like a moth drawn dangerously close to a flame.

Beneath his allure was an unsettling memory, a persistent feeling that pulled her, creating a sense of discomfort. Years ago, during their high school, she rejected him and mocked him of his appearance. That moment continued to resonate, intertwining with her current life, serving as a reminder of decisions made and opportunities missed. Curiosity outweighed caution as she swiped right, sealing their fates together once more.

With a trembling hand and a confused mind, she sent her first message to Nikhil Bhatia. Almost instantly, a reply pinged back. “Hey Kavya, is this really you? I can’t believe it!” Guilt and dismay churned in her heart, but she pushed through. She gathered her courage and sent her second message. The conversation flowed. They spent the entire day exchanging thoughts about their lives now and reminiscing about the past. Relief washed over her when she realized Nikhil hadn’t held onto past grievances. Their chats stretched late into the night, each message a bridge reconnecting them.

Finally, the day arrived for their meeting. They chose a Marine Villa café on Marine Drive. Waves crashed against the concrete barriers, a constant reminder of nature's power. The salty air mixed with the smell of fried snacks. It was a strange clash of longing and reality. As she approached, anxiety gripped her. Would they pick up where they left off? Or would the years create an unbridgeable gap? She took a deep breath and stepped inside, ready to face whatever awaited her.

As Kavya approached the table where he sat waiting, her heart raced, memories flooded back—moments filled with laughter shared under fluorescent lights turned sour when she chose rejection over acceptance all those years ago. "Nikhil?" Her voice trembled slightly as she settled into the chair opposite him. She searched his eyes for recognition, for a glimmer of the past they once shared. Would this be a chance to mend what was broken? Or would it only reopen old wounds?

He glanced away from his phone, his behavior transforming immediately from nonchalant disinterest to a blend of astonishment—a connection flaring to life between them regardless of their complicated past.

"Kavya," he breathed out slowly as if savoring each syllable before continuing, "I didn’t expect you’d actually show up."

"Neither did I," she replied honestly while stealing glances at his chiseled features—time had been kind to him while it carved deeper lines around her own insecurities.

The city was painted gold as the evening was descending and they both began sharing the fragments of the lost time. Kavya inquired with a sudden burst of curiosity, "What occurred after high school?" She was eager to explore the choices made by him while being entangled by societal expectations that gradually choke the individual, leading him toward the oblivion.

Nikhil shrugged with a sense of indifference, yet a fleeting sadness glimmered in his amber eyes, hinting at the countless nights he had spent contemplating the possibilities whilst taking that turn, Life happened, he replied with his raised eyebrows, a vertical wrinkle appeared between his eyebrows.

As the dialogue intensified, they became entirely absorbed in the moment, swiftly closing the distance between them. They found themselves increasingly at ease, immersed in their own shared reality.

Nikhil gradually closed the distance between them, their breaths becoming more synchronized. Kavya found it hard to comprehend that she was now embraced by this attractive man. The girl who had once turned him down was now prepared to abandon everything in order to embrace her feelings for him.

Darkness approached more swiftly than either had foreseen, piercing sirens shattered the tranquility, dismantling the carefully constructed illusions formed during their interactions. A sudden wave of chaos erupted, instigating a wave of panic among the crowds that had assembled nearby. This turmoil urged them to shift their focus from the profound action to the surrounding reality. Curiosity piqued, they exchanged glances, the kiss still lingering like a warm ember between them.

Kavya whispered urgently, "I eeerr… I must leave." as she rose quickly, pushing aside the unfinished thoughts that had lingered heavily between their breaths just moments before. The weight of impending dread spread rapidly, engulfing everything alive around them, as the two souls desperately sought an escape, feeling forever lost and uncertain of how to navigate the treacherous waters that lay ahead.

Following the kiss, Kavya experienced a wave of shyness and hurried to depart. Nikhil urged her to stay, but Kavya's embarrassment prevented her from facing him. Meanwhile, Nikhil’s was bewildered and asked Kavya about her well-being. Kavya reassured him that all was well and requested to leave. Before departing, she conveyed her feelings, smiled, and declared her love for Nikhil. In response, Nikhil was taken aback and questioned Kavya's sanity, asserting that a kiss does not equate to love.

Kavya stood frozen, her heart racing. The weight of Nikhil’s words crashed over her like a tidal wave. She had poured out her feelings, and now she felt stripped bare before him. Anger surged within her. “You don’t know anything about me!” she shouted. The tears she held back threatened to spill over, but she fought them. It was infuriating to think he could dismiss her emotions so easily.

Nikhil stepped forward, his expression shifting from shock to something darker. “You think this is easy for me? You think I wanted to feel this way?” His voice trembled with pent-up rage. “You laughed at me back then. You made my life hell.” Each word was a painful reminder of those school days. The laughter of classmates echoed in his mind, a chorus of mockery that had haunted him for years. “I had to rebuild myself. I had to fight to be someone again. And you think a kiss from you changes everything?”

Kavya’s resolve wavered. She stepped back, her breath shallow. “I was young. I didn’t know what I was doing.” But the excuse felt hollow. Nikhil was right; her past actions had consequences. “I’m not that person anymore,” she pleaded. “I’ve changed.” His eyes flared with disbelief. “Changed?” he scoffed. “Is this how you show it? By tossing around ‘I love you’ like it means something?”

The silence that followed was deafening. Each heartbeat felt like a countdown to an inevitable explosion. Kavya could see the hurt in his eyes, the scars her past had left. She wanted to reach out, to bridge the chasm between them. But doubt bedeviled at her. Would he ever truly see her? Or would she always be the girl who had once brought him pain? The tension hung thick in the air, a fragile thread ready to snap.
