A Ghastly Tale

As a child, I’ve always been curious and excited to hear ghost stories told by my grandparents and other elders even if I was scared. I used to stay awake at late night just to experience any ghostly sightings but never actually saw anything supernatural. As I grew up, I turned into a non-believer of anything which was not in my experience. I would never get frightened of being alone in dark or by horror movies. Then one incident changed my way of believing in Ghost!

This incident happened when I was around 18 years old. I had gone for a vacation at my uncle's place. He was newly joined to railway department job, so his whole family was moved into railway quarters (residence for employees working in Railways). I and my younger sister had travelled from Palanpur to Vadodara and reached his place around 10 PM at night. There was a balcony starting from the entrance of the home. It had a bathroom and a toilet on the left side and living room and bedrooms on the right side. Similar to the below arrangement so, from Living room, we could easily see the balcony.

After 2 days,

We were just relaxing and watching TV in the living room. After some time, I saw some white misty apparition running in the balcony toward the bathroom. I first thought I was hallucinating because I was tired of the day's travel. But this happened 2 to 3 times more. I told my uncle and he said that it must be some white pigeons which have their nests above the balcony. But I was sure they were not pigeons! I slept ignoring it.

The next day, I completely forgot about the incident and started doing my morning chores. I went to the bathroom to take a bath. The moment I entered the bathroom, I started shivering due to fear and was constantly feeling that something bad was lurking at me. I came out of the bathroom as soon as I could and told my uncle and mom. They again consoled me saying there was nothing to be worried about. I being a bold and fearless boy, my younger sister sensed something wrong.

Throughout my 5th day of stay, these things continued happening. Seeing white apparitions near the balcony and shivering inside the bathroom. I was also getting scared around other places in his house. One such place was the bookshelf inside the bedroom where I always got scared like crazy. I was unsure why it was happening to me! The questions remained unanswered for 6 months.

After 6 months, my uncle shifted to another place. After meeting him, he said that the house was haunted and a lot of terrible things had been happening there in 6 months of their stay, so eventually they decided to leave the quarter.

Uncle had inquired many people around the place and then he came to know that, a few years back, a married woman was staying in the same house and she had committed suicide by spilling kerosene all over her body and set herself on fire in the bedroom. As her body started burning, she screamed in unbearable pain and ran from the bathroom like crazy. She ran to all other room and eventually died in the balcony.

After hearing this, I was totally freaked out! My uncle said that my Aunty has been possessed many times at night by that woman’s Ghost and tried to kill her too in the same way she had committed suicide.
