                  THE CALL

By Anusha Das

One day I was returning from my school. That day I was supposed to be alone at home as my mother had gone out to attend a family ceremony. Usually I would take the longer and safer route but due to some repair work the road was blocked. Left with no other choice I had to take the shorter route. The road was deserted .As I kept on walking, murmuring a prayer to soothe my scared nerves. I came across a manor. The manor was said to be burned by unknown people years back and was believed to be haunted .People often heard weird noises coming from the manor. Pale with fear I hurriedly ran away from that fearful site stopping only when I reached home.

I was about to finish lunch when the telephone rang. I picked it up to answer the call thinking it must be my mother calling to ensure that I have reached home safe. “Hello! “I said. To my surprise, instead of my mother’s, a muffled voice said, “Come to the manor near the school.” Before I could ask who it was, the call ended. I stood there transfixed with surprise, holding the phone in my hand. After what seemed ages, I decided to call my friends and tell them whatever had happened. A long discussion followed and we finally decided to meet at eight ‘o clock in my house and set out for the manor.

We reached the manor and as per our plan broke up in pairs. The manor looked creepy from inside. It had two floors and a small garden at the edge. My friend Anila and I decided to go upstairs. We explored the upper floor for about an hour and finally reached a dark room filled with skeletons. We tried to gather up all our courage and stifle our screams when we heard a faint noise. To our horror we saw a skeleton walking towards us. It was too much for my nerves to bear! I screamed, tripped on something, fell on the cold marble floor and fainted.

I woke up and saw my friends and my parents surrounding me. Everyone told me that I had fallen asleep after my lunch. Was all that had just happened a silly dream?
