The Broken Promises

When I was 10, they promised me they'll get me a toy if I came first in class,

I was promised a car ride to stop me from crying because I broke a vase.

When I was 15, I was told that my uncle would bring me chocolates if I recited the poem right,

I was suppressed with their expectations to make my future bright.

When I was 19, I was promised a bike if I get into a college that comes in top 10,

I was even assured a good title, if I stayed away from men.

When I was 25, I was promised a good life if I married right away,

I was told to choose my groom for life, in just one day.

As time passed away, they made me think that it is okay to make promises and then break them,

But now I realize, that people just used to fake them.

The irony is, that all of these promises were accompanied by ifs and buts,

And most of these were unfulfilled, There were broken promises and broken trusts.

It may sound stupid that a kid who doesn't get a chocolate he was promised,

may learn to break promises in future mornings.

So next time you promise your five-year old a chocolate for something good that he does,

Make sure you bring one and teach him that it's not okay to break someone's trust.
