Nine Nights of Dance

Nine Nights of Dance

Seeing Devi’s upset face as an impending danger

Devadidev enquires, “Hey Maate! It’s this time of the year

When you eagerly wait to visit the earth!

This time your downcast face is a contrast

To your gleeful face every year!

May I know the reason why?”

“The vibrant autumn has arrived

Our children are in full swing

Preparing to welcome you enthusiastically

The festivities make them smile and hopeful

The myriad hues through dance and devotion

Steal all our hearts, and we all share such a bonding!”

“Yes, they worship me for nine days

and nights

Through fast, dance, and reveling!

However, I’m dispirited because of their betrayal

Their exhibitionist worship I don’t need

How can they mistreat women who are my reflections?

They are indifferent and insouciant towards them year-round.”

The hopeful Mahadev advises, “Unlike them you’re responsible.

Every time you go you inspire at least one woman

To take the Trishul into her own hands and fight.

This time too, you’d punish the ego and the evil

And, light up the dejected faces of the women

Who eagerly look forward to your homecoming!”
