Mother - The Protector

The eerie calmness of the chilly winter night was broken by the shrieking ringtone of my cellphone.

Startled and groggy eyed I pulled my hand out of the warm confines of the furry blanket and picked up the phone.

The combination of flashing name and the time on the screen made my heart jump into my mouth.It was my daughter’s call. "Why has she called so late at night” All possible worst scenarios flashed in my mind within the few seconds that I took to touch the screen.

“What happened sweet heart?". I blurted .Her distressed long drawn “Mumma” on the other end made me shudder.

Shaken I said “What happened”

“Mumma....”

I somehow managed to stop the phone from falling out of my hands.

“hey speak out, what happened?”

“Mumma...there is a rat in my room”

Mumma is speechless!
