The Umbrella

The Umbrella

It was raining cats and dogs. There was a boy named Joseph who lived in an orphanage just across the street. He was sitting near the window. He saw a blue car that stopped just parallel to the orphanage. There was a persistent girl and her mother in the car. Her mother stepped out of the car with a box and opened her umbrella. The umbrella was a bright yet unclean yellow.

When Joseph saw it, there was a wide smile on his face. He rushed down. A lady attended the door and allowed the girl and her mother to step in. They went inside. Joseph was hiding behind the wall, panting. The girl’s mother went to keep the box where all the other orphans were and unsealed

it. At once, all the children picked up a toy and started playing. When the girl saw this she became delighted. But then she spotted that her umbrella had disappeared from the stand. She found a trail of droplets and followed it.

Above the staircase she saw Joseph hiding something in the cabinet. She was gnashing her teeth so she pulled Joseph away, the cabinet opened and everything fell down with a loud thud. Her mother and the lady came up, curious. The girl pointed and revealed to her mother that Joseph had

stolen the umbrella. Joseph picked it up and the girl snatched it away. He began weeping. Teardrops trickled down his face. He told them about his past. His father couldn’t afford to buy him anything. He wanted Joseph to live a joyful life so he had decided to leave Joseph in the orphanage. Joseph didn’t knew that he would be left in an orphanage. He jumped ecstatically and walked with his father.

It was raining heavily. He had a same type of umbrella and a yellow scarf that he gave to Joseph. He left Joseph on the door. Years passed, he had an umbrella shop, he sold his yellow umbrella. After that, he hallucinated about seeing his father and ran behind him with a stick to support himself as

he grew old. His father disappeared. The girl had grown old as well and ran towards Joseph and hugged and kissed him.
