The Haughty Woodcutter

Gauri lived with his family on the outskirts of the city in a small village. It was a tribe of woodcutters who used to get wood from the nearby forest and sell it for money for their family.

Every day the villagers would wake up early in the morning and with their axes move towards the jungle. Everyone would work together singing a merry song and helping each other. But not Gauri.

He was a strong and tall man and extremely arrogant as well. He would always boast of his strength, of how he could cut the trees in one swing of his axe and how easily he could lift all those heavy logs.

"I don't need anyone", he would laugh."If you are weak you should stop being a woodcutter", he would say making fun of anyone who ever asked him for his help.

His wife would always request him to be kind and polite to others."A day would come when you'll need someone but they won't come", she would warn him.

And such a day really came. It was a very stormy day. The weather was very bad with strong winds blowing, threatening to blow off the roof of the villagers' hut. Everyone decided to stay home and not go to work.

When Gauri heard of this, he saw it as a great chance to brag. Ignoring everyone's advice, he lifted his axe and went into the jungle. There he started cutting the trees whistling to himself. With each blow of the axe he would say, "Oh how great I am ."

He was praising himself when suddenly, due to the wet ground, his foot slipped. The axe fell on his leg injuring him badly.

Gauri was unable to get up. "How would I go home. Someone help me", he shouted. But no one came.

Tears ran down his face. "Oh Mighty Lord, now I've realised my mistake.", he prayed.

"I was very proud and selfish and never helped anyone. I'm sorry for that ", he cried.

Just then he saw a group of people coming towards his direction. He felt a surge of joy. It was the villagers.

"We heard some shouts from the forest", one of them said.

"Yes. We knew you had gone off to cut the trees. We thought you might need help so we came."

"I'm really thankful to you all", he said apologizing for his rude behaviour. They all took him home.

Back at the village, he asked them why they had helped him. What they said changed Gauri forever.

"Even if you are a bit rude and arrogant, you are still a member of this tribe. It is our duty to take care of each other. ", replied the villagers.

That day Gauri realised the value of being kind and polite to others and pledged that he would do his best to help everyone in the village.
