The Grey Girl

The Grey Girl

It was 6:00 am, Rosa's regular wake-up time. The sunlight shone over Rosa's dark grey gloomy eyes. She opened her arms wide and began stretching to get out of bed. Once again, she held her arms away from her body to drag a lazy, wide and audible yawn. She fastened her morning robe around her waistline, feeling at ease. She hurried to go to the basin to brush her teeth. The brush's bristles slowly went along her teeth, clearing most of the germs. After brushing, she descended the stairs taking short steps slowly, at her own pace.

She turned to the left side, where the light gleamed her dark grey eyes. She opened the refrigerator and found some delicious flavoured milk. She grabbed and she could not stop thinking of drinking it bare. Her mom held up in a sudden start. “Yeah, mom. I know I should not drink it bare.”, said Rosa. “Very well then,” said Rosa’s mom. She opened the lid and the white milk started to pour out gracefully into the glass which showed the pretty white colour. Rosa was breathing heavily while getting into the car because she had a huge job waiting for her today.

She stepped into a new world, with thousands of people, not how she had seen it before with a few unintelligent and illogical kids and a nap time. Covered in scarves, she walked into a huge building, filled either with geniuses or stupid people. She saw kids 6 feet tall, where she stood like a baby doll in front of them. “This is it. Today, we’re starting middle school. It is definitely not like elementary school.”, mumbled Rosa. Her palms became sweaty and everyone watched her move into the hallway, judging on who this grey-eyed girl was. Rosa scrunched up her palms and walked up to her locker, acting bravely but that sweat truly showed that she was screaming all out inside.

Rosa was not so sure about why people looked into her eyes, seemingly, they were intimidating. She was wondering about it the whole class. She had a hard time focusing on the lesson and the judgement was something she would wonder about the first three months in school. One day, Rosa just normally said, “They’re probably looking at me because of my eyes. They are grey, no one else has them, right?” Just when she was saying that someone else dressed in black from her class came up to her and said, “Hey! How about you be my friend? I could be your first friend! I am Julia, nice to meet you…” “It’s Rosa. Thanks for being my friend. I appreciate it.”, said Rosa.

When she was going back home, she could not help but notice something strange happening inside of her body. “I feel my blood raging,” said she, in a deep, coarse voice. “Something is wrong with my voice!” she added. Rosa came home in a few minutes by then. She ran upstairs feeling strength and power. She didn’t feel like the same girl again. She let out her bag, trying to sleep in that state. Her mind would be awake no matter what, so it didn’t matter anyway. That light that would shine over Rosa’s eyes, showed her the way to darkness. She heard loud footsteps rushing towards her room. At that point, it was hard for her to trust anyone. So, she scrunched her arms making them tight and strong. “Honey!” said a voice, coming towards her room. “Honey, it’s me. Your mom.”, said Rosa’s mom. “Oh, mom! I was so frightened. I don’t know what’s going on inside me, mom.”, said Rosa in pure confusion and fear. “Rosa, I want you to wear these contact lenses and you should never walk outside without them. Even in the house. It is for your own good.”, said Rosa’s mom. “Okay, mom. I trust you.”, said Rosa. Rosa’s eyes trigger uncontrollably and turn all red. At least, Rosa put blue contact lenses on.

Rosa didn’t know what was going on with her. Her heartbeat would go faster than normal, her strength would be there whenever she needs it and luck follows her with carrying fear and confusion all around it. At this state, she just felt like a huge burden and a disappointment but she still pushed it through.

In one of her classes, she found a yellow note with ridged edges saying, “You’re invincible, Rosa. Meet me in the woods.” Rosa did not understand anything she was up to. “I have to figure this out by today.”, said Rosa to herself. “Excuse me, Rosa? Any doubts?”, interrupted her teacher. “None at all teacher,” said Rosa. After the bell rang hitting against all the old rusty steel, she finally went back home. She threw her backpack away and started thinking of what it could be. “…Superpowers!”, she exclaimed. “Mind reading?”, she said while her mind became smarter. She rushed to her mom asking her to think of a colour. “Blue,” thought she. “It’s blue!”, shouted Rosa. Rosa rushed back to her room, seeing that darkness and then she forgot light followed her from then on. “I might have all the superpowers!”, said Rosa, trembling in fear. She jumped on her bed, wanting to take a nap. Those little eyes fell asleep slowly, entering into a dream world. She heard, “Go to the woods. Go to the woods.”, every single second in the dream. Rosa could not bear it and went to the woods.

Rosa was not heard of more. Media named her missing case as “It all turned grey”. Yet, people keep searching for Rosa, whose name is the grey girl now.
