Quite a fiasco!

Quite a fiasco!

I was fast asleep. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. My immediate reaction was to go and open the door but the better part of my conscience made me halt midway. It was 2 a.m. in the morning and it was thundering outside. My parents were out for a trip and were to return only in the evening. Being all alone at home, I choose to ignore the untimely visitor and scurried back to my room.

Hardly, had it been five minutes than there was another knock at the door followed by a few more until someone was constantly pounding at the door.

The continuous downpour outside and power failure did nothing to mitigate my panic. I quietly crept down the staircase and reached the door to peep through the spyhole. As I looked outside, I was absolutely petrified. Two unknown strangers stood outside drenched in what looked like an oversized cloak - (whatever the dim light reflecting off the lamp post would allow me to see), carrying huge backpack behind. I tried to get a look at their faces but could only see their dark silhouette. Suddenly, the banging stopped. My legs were fixed to the ground and I couldn't think of anything. This was the first time such a situation had ever occurred to me. When I finally regained my composure and started going back into my room, I heard someone inserting something into the keyhole and turning it about. My heart thundered in my ribcage and I immediately began to scramble back into my room. That's when my leg slipped on the carpet and I hit my head on the ground with a thud! Darkness swam before my eyes and I soon passed out.

( 2 hours later)

I woke up to the sound of my parent's hushed whispers in the corner of the room." Mom , dad?", I croaked out. They instantly rushed to my side and engulfed me in a hug. " What are you guys doing here? I thought you were supposed to come in the evening." I asked. That's when they told me that it was their original plan but then decided to change and come back earlier to surprise me for my birthday. Since, there was no power, they couldn't ring the bell and instead started knocking when they realized they had forgotten to take the house keys. When I hadn't opened the door , they went to the neighbour to ask them for the spare keys and when they came back in, they found me passed out in the hall.

At first, I was in a sort of a daze. But then when I joined the dots, I was absolutely mortified! I couldn't believe how much I had over-reacted. When I told my parents my side of the story, they broke out into a full fledged chortle while I silently prayed for the ground to open up and swallow me in.

That night was a night I'll never forget for the rest of my life!
