The grenade fell in front of him. He jumped back into the trench. William was crying. He was crying because he didn't want to die. He cried because he wanted to see his parents. He cried because his best friend's body was lying in front of him and was missing an arm.

William was 19 when the war broke out. He was stationed in Northern France as part of his compulsory duty in the British army. He was pitied against the Imperial German Army. The sound of the guns and artillery scared William. The blood and the bodies scared him. He was crying in the mud when reinforcements arrived. He was picked up and his rifle was handed over to him by a French soldier. William couldn't understand him but felt a feeling of comfort. He stood up thinking of his nation, his parents and how he will be a hero for his country.

He was proud to be a British soldier. A great feeling overtook him and he was confident to fight. He climbed out of the trench and fired his rifle. He then charged with his fellow soldiers at the enemy. A bullet hit him in the head and he died in the spot. His body never reached to his country. He was buried in French soil after the battle.

He was one of the 700000 British soldiers that lost their lives in WORLD War 1.
