Jakub stared right into those soulless eyes. He had no sympathy for the man. If he was to decide his fate he would have shot him there. The man in the chair quietly stared into the dark knowing that no harm could come to him while he was in the custody of the police. He was a young man, and had big dreams but now he didn’t know if they would ever be true. His name was Simon. He was arrested on charges of being a serial killer who called himself The Reaper. Mr. Jakub Kowalski was the city’s most famous inspector. He had busted drug rackets, terrorist plots and whatnot. He was assigned with this case and now he was sitting with his main suspect. Jakub was sure that Simon was the one who had committed the murders. There were 17 of such murders and at each crime scene had a message left with the words “The Reaper” on them except they were written with blood.

Jakub wanted Simon’s confession and was ready to cross all limits. Simon had some strong evidence against him. He was seen at 7 of the crime scenes prior to the murders and a witness saying she saw him leaving an apartment of one of the victims. Simon said that it was all a coincidence and one of the murdered was his friend and he went to visit him an hour before the police broke into the house of the victim and found him dead. Jakub convinced that Simon was the murderer. He brought a rope in the prison cell of Simon and tied him to the chair. None of the police personnel dared to stop him or the consequences would be bad. After tying Simon up Jakub asked him “Why did you kill them?” to which Simon replied “I didn’t”. Agitated Jakub punched him in the face till Simon bled and then quietly repeated the question. Simon said “You’re mistaken sir.” in a voice that sounded like the person was going to cry. Jakub screamed at him “Then how were you at seven of the crime scenes!!?”. Simon said that it was a coincidence, while crying. Jakub went out of the cell and brought a bag back. He then opened it and removed pepper spray and sprayed Simon in the face till the can was empty.

Simon was screaming and shouting. One of Jakub’s colleagues tried to stop him but Jakub told him to shut up. He then asked Simon to confess to him about his crimes. Simon had stopped shouting but was crying said nothing. His hands were on his eyes due to the burning sensation of the pepper spray. Jakub was very mad at this point and removed a handheld taser from the bag and tased Simon for fifteen seconds. Simon had never felt such pain before, so helpless before. Jakub asked for his confession again. Simon was unable to answer due to the pain. He wanted to die. Jakub removed a knife from the bag. The whole police station got really quiet. Jakub took Simon’s hand and told him that if he doesn’t confess he will lose a finger. Simon quietly said that he didn’t do it. Jakub cut of Simon’s index finger. Blood was dripping from his hand, Simon was crying and screaming. He screamed he was innocent. By the time he could do anymore damage Jakub was stopped by the Commissioner who was called by one of the police officers present in the station.

Simon was sent to a hospital. Jakub was removed from his job with charges of torturing an accused in his prison cell where he was kept for a term of two days. Jakub was angry for being fired from his job. He cursed the media who were the main cause for his removal from his job. He was very stressed about what had happened. He decided to take a break and went to stay at his father’s house in the country. He felt very refreshed and happy there. He enjoyed the fresh air, there was no noise, pollution and there was no crowd. Life was good in the countryside. After a month, when he was reading the newspaper he read that Simon was declared innocent due to the lack of evidence. There was absolutely no strong proof that he had committed the murders. There were no finger prints of him found at the crime scene. Absolutely nothing. Jakub felt very sorry for torturing an innocent man. He felt bad. He decided to return to the city the next week.

He was going to leave for the city the next day. His mum asked him if he could stay a bit longer. He said that he had to return to police duty as he was given his job back. He that evening went on his last walk of the countryside. He walked for a good two hours and enjoyed the weather. He then went back home. When he reached home he found his father lying unconscious on the floor of his living room. He ran towards him and suddenly saw his mom dead in the kitchen. It looked like she had been shot. He turned around. Simon was sitting on a chair with a pistol in his hand. “Lovely evening Mr.Kowalski” Simon said but before Jakub could reply Simon shot him in the head. Then he lit the whole house on fire.

It all looked like an accident. The media wrote that his house accidentally caught fire. Nobody knew what happened. There was a state funeral. It was a big ceremony. It was visited by a lot of people. One of them was Simon who quietly stared at the empty coffin. It was empty because they didn’t find the body and didn’t know how else to honour him. Simon stared at it. He stared.
