letter from my ex

letter from my ex

I was sipping a steaming mug of coffee and eating some malai buns in between when a postman delivered a letter. My wife got the letter and passed it to me. She was an ordinary woman, simple yet beautiful. When she was passing me the letter, I caught her hand and placed a fluttering kiss on her palm, I caught the instant blush on her cheeks while she made some excuses and went away to the kitchen. It was a compliment that I still had this effect on her even 30 years after marriage. I focused on the letter in my hand which had no sender's name in it. But the letter was from my village so I opened it eagerly. I read through it in one go, that day had lost its charm for me.

"Dear, you,

I swear I don't wish to burden you with any inconvenience but I had to be a little selfish and write you this letter since there is no time left for me on this earth. Do you still remember how we fell in love with each other? We were in walking through a narrow road and you fell upon me clumsily. I was so irritated that day! Slowly as I got to know you while passing that narrow road, I saw a soulmate in you. I longed to feel your warm hands, to hear your silky smooth voice, to bless my ears with your happy laughs...I had prayed to have you in my life permanently. But as destiny writes the ending of every love story, I slowly realized that you would never be mine. That you're made for greater things in life. I wished to see you flying, I didn't want to be the one to hold you back...I purposefully did everything I could, to discourage you from pursuing me. I loved you silently from afar. I saw your every success. I rejoiced when you got the things in life you had always wanted...I was weirdly happy on the day you married, she was a sweet girl and I knew she would keep you happy.

Now that I'm fighting with an incurable disease, I wish I were a little selfish...perhaps you would be standing here and feeding me soup if only I had the courage to share all this with you. But as they say "If nobody loves you, then I must've died". I'm glad that I didn't stunt your growth. Live well, my love. I wish we never meet in the next life, for unrequited love is too heart-wrenching to go through."
