INDEPENDENCE DAY BLUES
INDEPENDENCE DAY BLUES
What does Independence Day really mean to me ? Yeah it's definitely a patriotic feeling ; Freedom and Independence from 200 years of British raj who came to India in the guise of East India Company and then ruled India for two centuries like the mughals did.
Who can forget the Bengal famine which was purely the result of systematic exploits of East India Company. I consider the Bengal famine as the biggest ever man-made natural catastrophe, as a result of which millions of lives were lost due to starvation & hunger. This was the turning point in Indian history, wherein the divided Bharat lost its grips & wisdom paving the way for British raj from East India company (a cunning ploy played & executed with perfection by the wily Britishers). It took 200 long & patient years to gain independence from British rule.
So we were finally released from the clutches of tyrannical british rule. So far so good. Apart from this what is it that we can call ourselves "independent" in the true merits and quality of life that we are
leading ?
Are we independent from slave mentality - NO ; Are we independent from coerced and induced thinking - NO ; Are we independent from bureaucratic hurdles and unwanted protocols that inhibit our progress and cause hindrances to our life - NO ; Are we independent from rampant corruption - a big NO
The biggest takeaway of Independence is that it has given us unlimited freedom and unlimited rights to commit unlimited wrongs. Undoubtedly we are a free and liberal society and nobody can stop us from stepping and wandering into the enchanted forests of nature with gay & abandon.
Lastly, independence to me is being able to say "Yes" with conviction and "No" without fear. I feel sad & sorry to say, I am not able to do that either, fearing backlash and isolation by the system.
On a brighter note, nobody can stop me from singing my "National anthem" which is a music to the ears and a balm to the mind that makes me feel so proud of the uniqueness & diversity of India !
