How The Common People Stay Happy

I used to fear becoming a common man; I believed that the common life is too boring. Now, I have come to the realisation that the common life is not easy, especially in India. And yet, the common people stay happy.

Just a few days ago, our scooter was punctured. I went to the nearest cycle repair shop to get it fixed. The owner explained to me how and why it happened, showing me a long screw that he took out from the tyre before my eyes. I instantly realised that he took pleasure in his work. The smile that he wore while working, the satisfaction that emanated from his face said it all. The pleasure he derived from his work was inspiring. He may not earn so much, maybe just enough to run his home, and yet he was so happy. The common man derives happiness from his/her work.

I also remember roadside food vendors in front of my college. They all seem so happy. Sure, they do earn a good amount of money. But the real reason behind their happiness is that they also love what they are doing. They get satisfaction and money.

The housewives take pleasure in taking care of their family. I study in a college in Nadiad, about 50 km from my home. I stay there in my room most of the month, mainly arriving home on weekends. Every time I arrive at home, my mother prepares something special. Most of her time is spent caring for us. The only time I see her doing something for herself is when she watches the TV serial she likes. And yet, she is always so cheerful and happy. And seeing her, we all become cheerful and happy.

The common man derives happiness from the complex simplicity of life.
