Almost Mine

Almost Mine

As I sat there in the English class, I stared at the girl next to me. She was my so called "best friend". I stared at her long, silky hair, her eyes, I was lost in her and wished she was mine. But she didn't notice me like that, and I knew it. After class, she walked up to me and asked me for the notes she had missed the previous day and I handed them to her. She said "thanks" and hugged me. I wanted to tell her, I wanted her to know. I love her, but yeah I was just too shy.

The phone rang. On the other end, it was her. She was in tears, mumbling on and on about how her boyfriend had broke her heart. She asked me to come over because she didn't want to be alone, she was exhausted, so I did. As I sat next to her on the sofa, I stared at her soft eyes, her hand firmly held by mine. After 2 hours, one movie, and three bags of chips, she decided to go to sleep. She looked at me, said "thanks" and held my hands tight. I wanted to tell her, I wanted her to know that I didn't want to be just a friend. And yet again I couldn't, silly me.

The day before prom she walked to my locker. "My date is not well" she said; "he's not going to be coming tonight". I didn't have a date, and in 8th grade, we made a promise that if neither of us had dates, we would go together just as "best friends". So we did the Prom night, after everything was over, I was standing at her front door step. I stared at her as she smiled at me and stared at me with her crystal eyes. My heart ached, yes it did and I know it. She said "I had the best time, thanks for always being there!," she messed my hair and smiled. Yet again I lost.

A day passed, then a week, a month. Before I could blink, it was graduation day. I watched as she floated like an angel up on stage to get her diploma. I wanted her to be mine, but yeah, it was not my fate. Before the ceremony was over and everyone left the hall, she came to me in her smock and hat, and cried as I hugged her. Who knows whether my eyes were filled with water too? Then she lifted her head from my shoulder and said, "please don't leave me ever, you are my best friend" and gave me a kiss on the cheek. Shivers went down my spine, she waved me back in teary eyes and left the hall. I stood there in my hat and cloak.

As I am sitting here by the window, 17 years have passed by, yet I didn't realize when the stream flowed down my cheeks and wet my collar. Yeah, she was almost mine, almost...
