In Limbo
In Limbo
Candy floss in the sky,
Soft, pink and luscious.
Casper and Wendy,
Flights into fancy.
Sitting by the window,
Still conjuring figures,
I play I Spy as I was wont to,
When the puffy clouds floated by.
But there was barely a cloud around today.
Just words, floating out
From years gone by.
Truth, kindness, respect...
They hung in the air.
Labour, loyalty, duty...
The words climbing up,
Like the rungs of a ladder.
I climb, and climb and the steps keep growing.
Knowledge, expertise, compassion, accommodation, tolerance, compromise...
Halfway up, I look below.
The first rungs are barely visible in the smog from earth.
The crescent moon beckons
But there's commotion underneath.
Should I return, to rebuild those rungs?
Or keep climbing alone?
The ladder lies in limbo
In the sky.
But I see hundreds down there wanting to climb.
I cannot leave them behind.
Truth, kindness, respect...
The first few steps in the ladder of life.
They must be fortified.
I return, and begin again.
For I cannot leave those little hearts behind.
