Elegy to Lost Love
Elegy to Lost Love
I met a little bird once
Its name was Love
It was lurking around my window
peeping in at times
scared to enter my world, maybe.
I opened the rusty window
that had been closed since years.
I left a cup of water on the window sil
the bird must have been thirsty
I figured.
Looking closely, I saw
it had a broken wing
that reminded me of broken hearts.
I put forward my palm
for the bird to hop onto
In gratitude, it did.
By now, I was almost in love
with Love.
I nursed it back to health
and gave it my love everyday.
Until one day,
it was ready to fly away
But I wasn't ready to let go yet.
I offered to build it a nest
right at the edge of my window sil
But it refused.
It wanted to fly.
All my attempts to hold it back failed.
One morning,
it was gone.
Without as much of a goodbye
or a note that said it loved me too
or even a word of thank you.
My heart felt heavy.
I sat by the window for a long time
Looking out into the sky
across the horizon
hoping to see my bird.
It was nowhere to be seen.
Maybe someday it will visit me again
when it is done exploring the sky
and longs for a home to rest in.
I left my window open
and went back to my life.
