Through the Looking Glass
Through the Looking Glass
Emma had always been drawn to antique shops, finding solace in their dusty corners and the whispered tales of forgotten treasures. One rainy afternoon, she stumbled upon a hidden gem tucked away in a narrow alley: "Through the Looking Glass."
Intrigued, Emma entered. The shop was a dimly lit maze of curiosities—furniture with stories etched into their wood, trinkets that seemed to hum with untold histories. Amidst it all, a large mirror stood out. Its gilded frame, adorned with intricate carvings of vines and flowers, seemed to shimmer with an ethereal light.
Approaching cautiously, Emma noticed something peculiar. The mirror's reflection was not quite right—it revealed not just her own image, but a faint glimpse of what seemed like an alternate reality behind her. Leaning closer, her breath misting the glass, she saw a figure standing behind her reflection—a figure absent from the real world.
Startled, she turned around, but the shop was empty. When she faced the mirror again, the figure had vanished. Shaking off the eerie feeling, she decided to purchase it. The shopkeeper, an elderly woman with piercing eyes, smiled knowingly as Emma made her choice.
"Be wary," the old woman cautioned, her voice barely above a whisper. "That mirror shows more than just what's in front of it."
Emma brushed off the warning as part of the shop's mystique and took the mirror home. It added an elegant touch to her bedroom, but soon, unsettling occurrences began. Shadows moved in its reflection, her image seemed to smirk when she did not, and once, she even saw her reflection blink when she didn’t. She felt as though the mirror watched her, studying her every move.
One night, she saw her reflection standing behind her with an eerie smile. Her heart raced as she turned to find nothing there. Determined to understand, Emma delved into research on mirrors as portals and consults the occult. The more she learned, the more convinced she became that her mirror wasn't just an antique, but a doorway to another world.
During a stormy night, Emma, candle in hand, stood before the mirror. She touched it, feeling a strange energy as her hand passed through the glass into a cold void. Emma stepped through, finding herself in a world both familiar and distorted, a warped reflection of her own. Shadows lurked, and twisted figures—echoes of people she knew—drifted silently.
Realizing they were trapped souls, Emma searched for an escape. As they closed in, whispering sorrowful secrets, she found the portal and hurled herself through.
Emma crashed back into her room, breathless. The mirror shimmered, its eerie reflections fading. She knew she could never fully escape its influence but resolved to protect others.
Returning to the shop for answers, Emma found only an empty lot. The shopkeeper and the mirror's secrets had vanished. Emma concealed the mirror in an old barn, hoping its secrets would remain buried forever, but she couldn't shake the feeling that it watched, waiting for another curious soul to stumble upon its mysteries.
