The Muddy Staircase - Chapter 14
Chapter 14
She gently closed the diary.
She wiped her tears.
Then looked at Johan.
A peaceful smile slowly appeared on her face.
“I know…”
“I know you’ve been fighting this battle all alone.”
She reached across the table and held his trembling hands.
“But from today…”
“…you won’t fight alone anymore.”
He looked at her, unable to believe what he had just heard.
She smiled through her tears.
“Waiting for your mother’s ‘yes’…”
“…is far more peaceful than walking away from you.”
For a few moments…
neither of them spoke.
Johan didn’t answer.
He simply cried.
Not loudly.
Not uncontrollably.
Just quietly.
For the first time in years…
he allowed himself to cry.
She gently wiped the tears from his cheeks.
A smile found its way to his lips.
With trembling fingers, he slowly opened the velvet box once again.
He looked at the pendant.
Then at her.
Without a single word…
Rhea gently moved her hair aside.
No permission was needed.
He understood.
With shaking hands, Johan carefully placed the pendant around her neck.
His fingers brushed against her shoulder for the first time.
Neither of them noticed the world around them.
No proposal.
No dramatic embrace.
No background music.
Just two hearts…
finally finding peace.
She looked at the pendant.
Then at him.
“It has found its home,” she whispered.
Johan smiled.
“So has my heart.”
Six Months Later
Life hadn’t become easier.
Every conversation at home ended the same way.
His mother still refused.
Status.
Language.
Religion.
To her…
they were reasons enough to say no.
Johan never raised his voice.
He never argued disrespectfully.
He simply waited.
He believed one day love would soften even the strongest heart.
The battle continued.
But there was one beautiful difference.
He was no longer fighting alone.
Every Sunday…
after church…
Rhea would wait near the old banyan tree.
Sometimes Johan would reach before her.
Sometimes she would.
The moment their eyes met…
an entire week of tiredness disappeared.
Some Sundays they spoke for only five minutes.
Some Sundays…
they simply walked together in silence.
Some Sundays…
they exchanged nothing more than a smile.
Yet those few moments became enough to give them strength for another week.
No promises.
No complaints.
No pressure.
Only hope.
Whenever Johan felt defeated after another conversation with his mother…
Rhea would gently remind him,
“Don’t lose faith.”
“If your love waited all these years before speaking…”
“…it can wait a little longer for acceptance.”
And whenever Rhea returned home after meeting him…
she would touch the pendant resting against her heart.
It reminded her that love wasn’t measured by how quickly two people got married.
It was measured by how patiently they held on to each other when life asked them to let go.
Months slowly turned into a year.
Nothing had changed…
and yet…
everything had.
Because they had stopped waiting for the perfect day.
Instead…
they chose each other…
every single day.
One quiet evening, Johan’s mother stood near the window and watched her son leave for church.
She noticed something she had never paid attention to before.
He wasn’t smiling because life had become easier.
He was smiling because hope had taught him how to endure.
For the very first time…
a question crossed her heart.
“Could a love that has waited this long… really be wrong?”
