Chapter 15

Johan’s mother finally called her home.

Rhea walked in nervously.

The very house she had once believed would never accept her…

now felt strangely peaceful.

Johan’s mother looked at her for a long moment.

Without saying a word, she picked up the old diary that had changed all their lives.

She gently placed it back into Johan’s hands.

“For years…”

“I fought against this diary.”

Her voice trembled.

Then she smiled through her tears.

“Today I realise…”

“I was never fighting this diary.”

“I was fighting my own son’s happiness.”

She slowly turned towards Rhea.

“Will you forgive an old mother?”

Rhea didn’t answer.

She simply walked forward…

and embraced her.

That one hug healed years of pain.

A few months later…

The wedding.

Nothing extravagant.

Nothing lavish.

Just blessings.

Family.

Friends.

And two hearts that had waited long enough.

Standing beside Johan was Karthik.

As the priest continued the rituals, he leaned closer and whispered,

“See?”

“I told you I’d get you married before I had grandchildren.”

Johan laughed.

“You’ve roasted me for years.”

Karthik grinned proudly.

“And look…”

“It worked.”

Both of them laughed.

The sacred thread rested in Johan’s trembling hands.

Before tying the thaali, he leaned slightly towards her.

“Do you remember the muddy staircase?”

Rhea smiled.

“How can I ever forget?”

He smiled back.

“That little fall…”

“…gave me my entire life.”

She looked into his eyes.

“So… thank you for helping me that day.”

Without another word…

he tied the thaali.

The temple bells echoed.

Their journey had finally found its beginning.

Years later…

One peaceful morning…

Johan and Rhea walked hand in hand.

Between them walked a tiny little girl.

She wore a neat white school uniform.

Two tightly tied braids.

Bright white shoes.

A heavy school bag.

And an oversized water bottle that bounced against her shoulder with every step.

She looked ahead excitedly.

“Amma!”

“Appa!”

“Look…”

“This shortcut has stairs!”

Before either of them could say anything…

she happily started climbing the old muddy staircase.

Halfway up…

her little foot slipped.

For one tiny moment…

time stood still.

Before she could fall…

two hands reached from one side.

Two more from the other.

Four hands caught her together.

The little girl looked at them in surprise.

“I’m okay!”

Johan and Rhea looked at each other.

Then…

they both laughed.

The little girl frowned.

“Why are you both laughing?”

Neither of them answered.

Because they both knew…

their entire story had begun…

with one little fall on this very staircase.

This time…

their daughter never touched the ground.

Because love had taught them…

some falls are meant to begin a story…

and some hands are meant to protect it forever.

Some love stories begin with a proposal.

Ours began with a muddy staircase… and every step after that, we walked together.

The End.
