The Messy Girl, with Sunshine in her Heart

The Messy Girl, with Sunshine in her Heart

There are some people you meet in life.

And then there are some people you feel.

She was one of those people.

The first time I saw her, I couldn't quite understand what it was about her that caught my attention. There was nothing particularly dramatic about the moment. No thunder. No music playing in the background. No perfectly written line from some romantic movie.

Just a girl.

A girl moving around as though the world had somehow forgotten to give her a pause button.

She was everywhere.

Here for a moment.

There for another.

Picking something up.

Dropping something else.

Looking for something she had probably kept somewhere herself and then forgotten about.

Breaking things.

Fixing things.

And occasionally, breaking her own head trying to understand things that probably didn't need to be understood at all.

She was messy.

Not the kind of messy that makes you want to clean up after her.

The kind of messy that makes you smile.

Her room might have its own geography. Her thoughts certainly did.

There were roads in her mind that led nowhere, turns she took twice, questions she asked herself even after she already knew the answer.

She could think about everything.

And somehow, think about nothing.

She could spend an entire evening analysing one sentence someone had casually said five hours ago.

She could create ten different meanings from three words.

She could replay a conversation that had already ended and have five different versions of it before going to sleep.

And yet...

When you were around her, your own mind became strangely quiet.

That was the first mystery about her.

How could someone who carried so much noise inside herself create so much silence in someone else?

She had this strange little energy.

A kind of warmth that didn't announce itself.

It simply arrived.

Like sunlight finding its way through a window you had forgotten to open.

Her face had something almost unfairly beautiful about it.

Not merely beauty.

It was the way her face seemed to bloom when she smiled.

Like a flower that didn't need permission from the garden to open.

There was light in it.

A softness.

Something that made you look at her and think—

Maybe the world isn't such a terrible place after all.

And then she would start talking.

And that voice...

Her voice was like a hummingbird moving through the quietest corner of a garden.

Light.

Gentle.

Alive.

The kind of voice that doesn't demand your attention.

It simply earns it.

You could listen to her talk about the most ordinary things and somehow feel that the ordinary had become beautiful.

And she talked.

Oh, she talked.

She loved people.

She loved conversations.

She loved knowing someone's story.

She could walk into a room knowing nobody and walk out having collected three new stories, two new friendships and probably somebody's entire childhood history.

People sometimes misunderstood that.

They saw a girl who spoke easily with people and decided they understood her.

They didn't.

Because she wasn't looking for attention.

She was looking for connection.

There is a difference.

She didn't talk to people because she needed everyone to like her.

She talked because she was genuinely curious about human beings.

She wanted to know what made people laugh.

What broke them.

What they were afraid of.

What dreams they had secretly buried.

What songs they listened to when nobody was around.

And sometimes people took that kindness the wrong way.

But she knew herself.

At least in that part of her life.

Her heart was clear.

She could be playful without being careless.

Friendly without being false.

Warm without having an agenda.

She had the soul of a child and, strangely, the understanding of a woman who had already lived several lifetimes.

That was another contradiction.

She could get excited over the smallest things.

Laugh at something completely stupid.

Become ridiculously happy over something that another person might not even notice.

There was still a little girl living inside her.

A little girl who wanted to run through life without worrying about whether she was running in the right direction.

A little girl who could turn an ordinary moment into an adventure.

A little girl who could be stubborn, dramatic, mischievous and completely impossible sometimes.

But behind those childish eyes was a woman.

A woman who had learned that life isn't always kind.

A woman who had learned to stand even when she didn't feel strong.

A woman who could carry responsibilities, disappointments, expectations and fears and still walk into a room carrying enough light for everyone else.

She was stronger than she knew.

Perhaps that was the saddest thing about her.

Because strong people are rarely told how tired they are allowed to be.

And she...

She was tired sometimes.

Not physically.

Some battles don't leave bruises on the body.

They leave them somewhere deeper.

Inside the mind.

She overthought.

God, she overthought.

She could take one tiny doubt and feed it until it became a monster.

She could turn maybe into what if.

And what if into what if everything goes wrong?

She would question herself.

Question people.

Question situations.

Question decisions she had already made.

Sometimes she would stand at the edge of clarity and then walk herself back into confusion.

She would untangle one thought only to discover three more knots underneath it.

And perhaps nobody saw how exhausting that was.

Because from the outside, she still looked like sunshine.

She still laughed.

Still talked.

Still cared.

Still showed up.

Still made other people feel better.

That is the strange cruelty of people like her.

They become shelters for everyone else while forgetting that they, too, deserve somewhere to rest.

She could be falling apart quietly and still ask someone else,

"Are you okay?"

She could be fighting her own demons and still find the strength to make someone else smile.

She could be drowning in thoughts and somehow become the lifeboat for another person.

That is why I don't call her lucky.

Lucky is too small a word for someone like her.

She is a blessing.

A blessing that somehow wandered into this world carrying more light than she knows what to do with.

She is the kind of person who can walk into a dark room and not switch on a lamp.

She simply becomes the light.

She is the rain that finds a desert that had almost forgotten what rain felt like.

She is moonlight falling into a room that has forgotten the sun.

She is the breeze that arrives on the hottest afternoon and makes you close your eyes for a second just to feel it.

She is the flower that blooms quietly in a garden and somehow makes everything around it look more beautiful.

And perhaps that's why I wish for only one thing for her.

I don't want to see tears in her eyes.

Not those tears.

Not the ones born from loneliness.

Not the ones created by disappointment.

Not the ones caused by someone else's inability to understand the heart they were holding.

Not the tears that come from wondering whether she is enough.

Because she is.

She always was.

I want her eyes to know only the kind of tears that arrive when happiness becomes too large for the heart to contain.

The kind that appear when someone tells you,

"You matter."

The kind that come when a dream finally comes true.

The kind that fall when you realize that somewhere, somehow, someone noticed every little thing about you and loved you for all of it.

The messy parts.

The loud parts.

The complicated parts.

The childish parts.

The overthinking.

The stubbornness.

The endless conversations.

The broken things.

The confused thoughts.

The moments when you don't understand yourself.

The moments when you understand yourself perfectly.

All of it.

Because maybe that's what makes her beautiful.

Not the fact that she has everything figured out.

But the fact that she doesn't.

She is still learning herself.

Still discovering which thoughts deserve to stay and which ones deserve to leave.

Still learning that not every silence needs an explanation.

Not every change needs a reason.

Not every person needs to be understood.

And not every problem needs to be solved tonight.

Maybe someday she will learn to be as gentle with herself as she is with everyone else.

Maybe someday she will stop punishing herself for having a complicated mind.

Maybe someday she will understand that being a little messy doesn't make her broken.

It makes her human.

And perhaps that is the most beautiful thing about her.

She doesn't have to be perfect.

She doesn't have to stop being childish.

She doesn't have to stop talking to people.

She doesn't have to stop laughing loudly.

She doesn't have to stop getting excited over little things.

She doesn't have to stop overthinking overnight.

She doesn't have to become someone else to deserve love.

She only has to remain herself.

Because somewhere between the chaos in her room and the chaos in her head...

somewhere between the girl who keeps breaking things and the woman who keeps putting herself back together...

there is something extraordinary.

There is a girl who makes people feel alive.

A girl whose presence can make an ordinary day feel less ordinary.

A girl whose smile can quietly change the atmosphere of a room.

A girl whose kindness is so natural that she probably doesn't even realise how rare it is.

A girl who is sometimes lost inside her own thoughts but somehow helps everyone else find their way.

A girl who doesn't know how beautiful her soul is because she spends too much time questioning everything else.

And if she ever asks me what I see when I look at her...

I don't think I'll know how to explain it.

Because how do you explain sunlight to someone who has never noticed that they are glowing?

How do you tell the rain that it saved a desert?

How do you tell the moon that someone found their way home because of its light?

How do you tell a flower that an entire garden feels different simply because it decided to bloom?

Maybe I would simply tell her this:

You are not the mess you see when you look at yourself.

You are the warmth other people feel when they are around you.

You are the laughter that stays after the conversation ends.

You are the peace that arrives without being invited.

You are the little girl who never completely grew up...

and the woman who somehow became strong enough to carry an entire world inside her.

You are complicated.

You are chaotic.

You are sometimes impossible.

You are wonderfully, beautifully messy.

And somehow...

you are still one of the most beautiful things life could have placed in someone's path.

So please...

when the thoughts become too loud,

when your heart becomes too heavy,

when you start questioning yourself again,

remember this:

There is someone who looked at all your chaos...

and didn't see a mess.

He saw a miracle.

He saw a blessing.

He saw a tiny bundle of joy running around the world, breaking a few things, fixing a few things, overthinking everything, laughing at nothing, caring about everyone...

and somehow making the world a little brighter simply by being in it.

And if life ever makes you cry,

I hope it is only because you finally realise how deeply you are loved.

Because a girl like you was never meant to spend her life hiding tears.

She was meant to spend it...

creating reasons for them to be tears of joy.
