The Girl at the Gym

The Girl at the Gym

A stage of my story takes place in a gym.
As usual, I was doing my workout, but instead of motivating myself, I was criticizing myself. No matter how much effort I put in, I always felt that it was not enough.
A few moments later, I noticed a beautiful girl at the gym. She seemed to look in my direction several times. I wasn't sure why, but I continued exercising.
After some time, she walked towards me and said, “Wow! You're doing really well.”
Most people would have felt happy hearing that, but I wasn't satisfied with myself. I shook my head and replied, “No, not really. My progress isn't impressive at all. Other people here lift much heavier weights than I do.”
She looked surprised and asked, “What do you mean?”
I sighed and said, “Look around. Everyone seems stronger, fitter, and better than me. Compared to them, I don't think I'm doing enough.”
For a moment, she stayed silent. Then she smiled and said something that completely changed my perspective.
“You know what they say? Comparison is the thief of joy.”
I looked at her, confused.
She continued, “If you keep comparing yourself to others, you'll never be happy. There will always be someone stronger, faster, smarter, or more successful. But their journey isn't your journey.”
I thought about her words, but I still wasn't convinced.
“What if I'm not satisfied with where I am?” I asked.
She nodded politely and replied, “There's nothing wrong with wanting to improve. In fact, that's a good thing. It means you're willing to grow. But there's a difference between pushing yourself and constantly putting yourself down.”
Her words hit me harder than any workout ever could.
Be better than who you were yesterday,” she said. “That's the only comparison that truly matters.”
For the first time that day, I looked at myself differently. Maybe I wasn't where I wanted to be yet, but I wasn't the same person I had been when I started.
As she walked away, I realized something important: progress doesn't have to be perfect to be meaningful.
That day, I finished my workout with a smile.

  1. Not because I had become the strongest person in the gym, but because I had finally stopped fighting against myself.

Growth begins when you stop comparing yourself to others and start appreciating your own progress.
