The Fan That Changed My Perspective

The Fan That Changed My Perspective

There was a small family function at our house. As always, the entire family gathered together, and the house was filled with laughter, conversations, and happiness. Everyone seemed excited to spend time with one another.

Like every family gathering, all the women in the house—including me—were busy from morning until night. We cooked meals, washed utensils, served guests, cleaned the house, and made sure everyone was comfortable. We worked continuously without taking proper breaks because we wanted everything to be perfect.

Finally, after hours of hard work, it was time for dinner. We sat down together to eat, feeling tired but relieved. Near us was an adjustable fan, and for the first time that day, we could enjoy a little comfort while eating.

A few minutes later, my elder brother arrived with his friends. They sat down nearby for dinner. Without asking us, the fan was turned away from us and placed toward them. We remained sitting in the heat.

Everyone stayed silent, as if nothing had happened. But I couldn't.

I quietly said, "We've been working since morning. Can't we at least eat our meal in peace? Your friends didn't spend the whole day cooking, cleaning, and serving everyone. Why do they deserve the fan more than we do?"

No one responded. The conversation simply ended there, and life moved on as if my words had never been spoken.

Around the same time, my sister-in-law made a small mistake while serving dinner. It was something anyone could have done after working for hours. Yet she was scolded harshly by her mother-in-law because it was her husband's family home, and she was expected to be perfect.

Watching all of this made me realize something important.

Sometimes, the people who work the hardest receive the least appreciation. Their efforts become so routine that they are taken for granted. The smallest comforts are given to others, while those who quietly carry the greatest responsibilities are expected to continue without complaint.

That evening, I didn't remember the food or the celebration. I remembered the fan.

Not because it was just a fan, but because it represented something much bigger—the unequal value often placed on invisible work.

Respect is not shown only through big gestures. It is reflected in the small things—offering a seat, sharing comfort, saying thank you, or simply recognizing someone's effort. The people who silently hold a family together deserve appreciation just as much as those who are celebrated.
