The Door!

The Door!

She approached the unfamiliar door and nervously took the key from her pocket. She took a deep breath, unlocked the door, paused, then opened it. To her horror, she saw two almond colored eyes staring at her. She shut the door, yet again. She wasn't brave enough. "Please." She heard the voice from the other side. "Help me." The little girl was begging. The woman stood there glancing at the door she had just closed. "I can't breathe." The little girl cried. "This closet... It is so small."

She kept staring at the door. She wanted to let the little girl out, but knew the dark secrets the closet held. "Never open the closet door, Anna." She had been warned so many times "It will only bring shame to the family. You know what will happen if her voice is heard, don't you?" Anna knew whatever she was doing was wrong, whatever her family wanted her to do was vile but she had no choice.

"I... can't... breathe... Let me out, please!"

The little girl was gasping for breath. She was dying. I should have never come here. Anna thought. Just then the lightning flashed across the sky and the thunder rumbled sending chills down Anna's spine. The gale rushed through the window banging it across the adjacent wall carrying with it cold rains. Only then Anna realized the carnage which had ensued outside. It had been ages but the tempest wouldn’t stop. There only was darkness, abyss and the screams of the little girl. Anna was trapped, all alone. I shouldn't have come here.

It had been ages since Anna had visited this sinister corner. Since her childhood she had been warned and taunted about the evils this place held. "I should have killed you when I first heard your voice. Just choked you. It would have been over, once and for all..." Anna yelled at the door, at the little girl behind it. She wanted the loud voice to conceal the hollowness of the words.

"And yet here you are, clenching the key, standing at the same cross-roads, again!" There was calmness in the little girl's voice, unlike before. "Let me out, embrace me and I promise I will make it all better. I will put an end to this mayhem outside."

"No. I can't. Once you are out, it will all be over."

"Yes. But once my secret is out, it will be over once and for all. I won't have to stay in this locked closet. I will be free. We both will be free."

"But the embarrassment...",

"Am I? Is our relationship embarrassing to you?" Familiar voice broke the trance which trapped Anna. There stood the most beautiful girl Anna had ever seen with hazelnut eyes and glimmering golden hair.

"Emily." Anna's lips curled into a gentle smile.

“Anna, I had just come here to convince your parents about our relationship but if you yourself consider our love a taboo, something to be ashamed of, then I guess I will leave.” Emily turned around and started walking towards the door.

“Stop her, Anna. Don’t let her walk away.” The little girl whispered “Let me out. Come out of the closet, Anna. Only you can stop the storm. Please Anna. Let me breathe. Let us both breathe.” The unfamiliar door stood between the little girl and Anna. The unfamiliar door stood between Emily and Anna. “Come on Anna, you can do it. It is now or never.” In a moment of courage, Anna listened to the little girl. She opened the closet door and finally let herself come out. She rushed and held the hand of the woman she loved. The warm soft hand left a titillating feeling of ecstasy. The thunderstorm finally stopped and a rainbow appeared in the sky.
