The Blue Pen

The Blue Pen

I had been a clumsy child, and a totally messed up adult too! My children were much more disciplined than I. But I used to make resolutions of keeping everything organised each year when I was a teen. And now, each week I try to change this habit of mine!

That morning, having decided that I would clean the room and the attic, I started with dusting my cupboard. Later on, I climbed on a stool in order to reach the huge, untouched suitcase I carried at my in-law's after marriage.

I knew it well that it would take me back in time as many things from my Mom's house were stuffed in. I mustered up courage to open it and rearrange everything. As I pressed the buttons to open it, many things ,as expected just fell out and scattered.

The very first thing to catch my attention was a blue pen! The body was shining, while the cap's top part seemed a bit pressed, probably because it had stayed in that case under a lot of things. And slowly, the old days started lingering in my mind.

Being a blundering person always, I had once forgotten to carry my writing materials to the examination hall! I was just shattered apart to find my pouch missing. I started looking here and there with tears in my eyes. But, nothing could help. I thought of the huge cane with which my Mom would welcome me home for not attempting the paper, just because of my carelessness!

Through my filmy eyes, I could see a girl approaching. I just controlled my emotions and decided to face whatever comes. Cladded in a simple, pink saree, she wore no jewellery to accompany the clothing. Yet, she looked so beautiful. I could make it out that she was a senior to me. She came and stretched her arm in my direction. Those days, we had our seniors to monitor us. This one seemed so studious and I thought she was there to ask me hurry up to the hall. But surprisingly, she gave me a blue pen! She had a smile on her face. Neither she said anything, nor I. But we both spoke through our eyes. Her eyes shown acceptance to my clumsiness and mine had shown gratitude. She headed our line towards the hall.Later, I never met her. That day was their batch's farewell. Thus, she left our school and left it after extending a great help to me.

My younger one came in running and just hugged me tightly. This made the train of thoughts take a halt. I took the blue pen and kept it in the desk. My son asked what it was, and I narrated the entire incident to him. Through this, I could also tell him to help others. See, that girl's pen at this moment is also helping me... helping me to give my child the value of helping all! I was overwhelmed that day. The entire day turned out to be a blessing for me.
