A Friend I Never Made!

A Friend I Never Made!

I was fed up with all the chuckles around me. I was dragged here against my will, just because my Mom deemed attending all the parties to be a social norm of our 'class'.

Well, though she called ourselves to be the upper-class people, I hardly found any difference. I never understood the term.

The party was to celebrate Mr. Roy's son's return from London, after the completion of his higher studies there. I never enjoyed the glimpses of those friends of my Mom who would come near me and examine the way I looked. They even passed comments in their sugar-coated words.

I wore a heavy, uncomfortable dress that day, along with the pearl set my Mom had chosen for me. My body ached due to the discomfort I was put into, and my mind needed some peace at the moment. My Mom and my elder brother were both busy with their companions. I took this chance to escape from the situation and find a safer, nicer place for me to relax. And I did!

Mr. Roy's huge bunglow had a little room adjoining the chamber. I reached there but still could hear the mixed voices of the people from the hall. Still, I cherished being alone at that point in time. I rested my back on a sofa placed there, maybe just an unused one. How relieved I was!

I heard someone approaching. A boy, younger , maybe in his teens came in. He stood at the end of the sofa. I could see a strange feeling on his face. After all, why would one of the guests invited by his Master lay alone like that?

He offered me some water, without me asking for it. Maybe, he thought I was I'll. And I accepted the glass of water with a smile. He started descending without a word. I liked his kind, tender and sensitive nature (as of now, I knew this about him for sure).

I stopped him. I asked him to accompany me till the party was over! But he gently refused. The void between us, created by the economical conditions broke him apart at that point. I extended my hand to make friends with him, but again, to this too... he refused!

The incident made a deep mark on my heart. The first rejection by a friend I would have made, just because of the unwritten rules of the society(meaningless, most of them are!).
