My favourite book is a memoir of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, originally written in Hindi, titled Mera Jivan Sangharsh (My Life Struggle). The book is written in simple language which talks about life and struggles of farmer during British India. Indian struggle for independence mainly highlights the contribution made by Congress leaders. When I started reading this book, I encountered many similar questions in my life and I feel associated with the writer. Swami was a few writers who could explain Bhagwat Gita and he wrote on Hindu rituals titled Karmkalap. Swamiji fought for common people, farmers and labourers; however, he was projected as a leader of a particular community. I like this book because this is the life experience of a revolutionary leader who was born in a Brahmin family but challenged the wrong practices and fraud propagation of Brahmins. He fought against his own community Zamindar and stood for farmers. He opposed Gandhi and supported Subhash Chandra Bose. He was a great organiser and visionary. Interestingly, I found him a knowledgeable and great scholar of Sanskrit and studied books on religion, society, and culture. While reading his book, I found him both a Sanskrit scholar and a communist leader too. He became a great threat to so-called Brahmins and he is a Dandi sanyasi which is adopted in Varanashi a place of very rigid Hindu practices. He addressed Vaishnav order and also Bairagis. He had travelled widely and reflected his life experience memoir in his book. He had described his differences with other leaders of his own community, especially with Sir Ganesh Dutt. He calls the act of Zamindari is a crime and wickedness. He was attracted towards Gandhi and congress initially but he explains the reasons why he decided to disassociate himself with Gandhi. This book is a unique language, style, content, and structure. Initial pages of this book talk about his family background, his education and his family life. There are a few gaps such as chronological order of events in his life, his debates with other Brahmin communities, His contribution to Bhumihar Brahmin press and publication of newsletter Hunkar. He talks about his study of Sanskrit scripture under few prominent Sanskrit scholars. I found the answer to many unanswered questions in his book especially My Life Struggle.
