She sat there, head in hand, waiting for her order to come. When it finally did, she pushed around the pasta, cooling against her instinct of just pushing it into her mouth and letting the scalding food burn her tongue.

The music was light and smooth. It felt like quiet summertime and coupled with the yellow fairy lights, managed to put a deep set of peace in her. She swirled her glass in lazy circles, mesmerized by the wine lapping up against the sides, tripping on itself. A little red whirlpool of her own on her petite table.

Carefully bringing it to her lips, she drained the glass. It tasted fine, good but not good enough for her to bother to savour it. She felt it warm her throat. And then she noticed the shadow that fell upon her table. She looked at the man blearily before picking her napkin up and wiping the corners of her mouth.

Her food and wine were finished. She was done. The man sat down before her.

"I'm sorry I came late-" he stopped when she held her finger up.

She stretched back into her seat and made sure to look him in the eye when she said, "I can't keep doing this."

The numbness had crawled into her voice, and she was glad it did. The indifference gave her an edge she didn't have. They had gotten into many fights, in which she was the one who had to compromise, to lose. But she was going to win this one. It was an addictive feeling, she wondered as she watched his expression fill with confused dread.

"It's exactly what you're thinking it is," she said before he could splutter. "I am done with this, and done with you. If you're wondering why ask my waiter. He's been serving me for two hours now."

She stood up, shrugging on her coat and collecting her purse.

"Wait. I don't understand. You can't just do this to me. Let us talk it out!"

"The least you can do is pay the bill," she murmured and brushed past him and his endless blustering. She thanked her waiter to whom she had explained her payment earlier, and let the door close behind her.

Outside the restaurant, the wind was chilly, but the traffic was as lively as ever and the people never stopped moving. She was glad she brought her coat with her.
