My RDC Camp’s Selection

“Babu Paka, chest number 23” My name was announced by Brigadier Rajesh Ghildayal, Group Commander of NCC, Amaravati Division, Maharastra. I was selected for Republic Day Camp in Delhi in the year 2004. “This calls for a treat, brother”. Screamed one of my best friends, Rahul Sharma. “No dude, the final list is still yet to be read out. Don’t count the chickens before they are hatched!” I retorted. Our group commander was reading out the names from the final list who were selected for Delhi camp, and when I heard my name called out by the GC, I couldn’t believe my ears. I was almost in a state of shock. Rahul persuades me further, “This, of course, is the final list, Babu. You have been selected for Delhi RDC Camp 2004-2005. And you know what, you may even get the opportunity to take part in the Republic Day parade in Delhi.”

We were practicing for more than six months near the Army Cantonment area in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

There were innumerable cadets from all over Maharastra. As the competition was too stiff, I always thought I wouldn't be selected. We were made to run for almost 6 to 9km every day with dummy rifles early in the morning. After such long runs, we were asked to stand in a queue to check the way we marched past. I must say, it was very rigorous. After a tiring day, we used to go to bed by midnight and would again wake up at around 5 the next morning.

I was so happy to know that I got selected for one of the most privileged camps in NCC. That very evening I went outside the camp and phoned my mother, “Maa, all my diligent efforts paid off. Today was the last day of our training and in the afternoon names were announced of the selected candidates. You know what? My name was there too! I am so delighted maa. I was just wishing how soon I can talk to you.” “That's great news, beta! I know you will get selected and participate in the Republic Day Parade. I am so very happy dear. God bless you and may you get success like this in the future too.” Replied my maa on the other side of the phone. Her voice was almost choked, and she was in tears. “Please don’t cry maa!” I insisted. “I am very proud of you, my dear. These are the tears of joy, beta! God bless you always!”

My happiness knew no bounds that day. I thought, at least I could make my maa feel proud of me. I am still thankful to god for this unforgettable moment in my life. I wished my father would be alive too. How proud he would have been!
