A Child Waiter

“Why don’t you go to school and study? I understand, you do not have enough money. But aren’t there government organisations or NGOs to look after children like you? I’m shocked to see you in this condition, dear.” I was talking to a child about 12 years old who had been working there as a waiter at a Dhaba in the outskirts of our city. I so wished to help him, and I even tried few numbers of NGOs, however; in vain.

“Sir, I don’t understand what you are saying. Please hand me over the cup if you have finished your tea. My master will shout at me if he sees me chit-chatting and passing time with you.” Replied that boy. His eyes still had contentness, as he was sure he would get his daily wage that day. Although he did not know to read or write, he knew to show respect and was very courteous.

My soul wept that day; however, I have got used to such scenes now. I have been numb.
